Default C1287 but a bit more technical question, Tech2 gurus step in

RPO JL4 equipped. So a 1287 states that conditions to set are one of the following
  • can be set if the steer rate (speed that the steering wheel appears to be turning exceeds the limits set by the EBCM)
  • will be set if the analog degrees differ from he digital degrees by more than 25 degrees for 5 seconds when the vehicle is not in an active handling event, or 1 second if the vehicle is in the active handling event.

These are my two questions.
1. What is the "limit of steering wheel speed set by the EBCM"?
2. The second condition to set DTC mentions a variance of 25 degrees between digital and analog on the SWPS yet the SWPS test on page 5-116 of volume 1 of the service manual states that while centered "the reading should always be near zero for the digital and analog display. (5 degrees of each other). Now is this at any SW angle or just straight ahead? When running the SWPS test in the tech 2, my digital and analog are occasionally further than 5 deg. apart but nowhere in this test criteria on page 5-116 does it exactly say that anything over 5 deg, is a fail.

So are these two separate criteria? Why does the SWPS test state it must be +/-5 yet to set DTC 1287 it must be >25 degrees? Is that 6-19 degree area just wiggle room for wear on the sensor to allow it to function but not set the DTC?

Thanks
Dave

No problem. The 2001 and above design is different for the SWPS. I will research your 2000 FSM when I get home. I will also look into your other Thread on the Yaw reading. That could be an accuracy issue.

C1287 in the 2001 FSM diagnostics has no direct testing of the Yaw or Lateral Accelerator inputs.

Yeah the 2001+ sensor doesn't use the analog output from what I've heard. . I know C1287 doesn't mention yaw output but C1286 does which I have gotten in the past. I don't want to just throw parts at it and I want to understand everything that is going on here fully.

Another question that I have which isn't actually mentions is that is this following spec while wheel is straight or always? Logic would dictate always but I forget which it is but the analog output stops at 220 (Right) and 226 (Left). That is by design I think as I have multiple sensors that behave this way. So at one point they will differ from each other by more that 25 degrees when beyond ~220 degrees in either direction.

"The second condition to set DTC mentions a variance of 25 degrees between digital and analog "

Anyone have any insight? There has to be ONE GM tech in here who would have a bit more detailed knowledge than me on this.

Do you have the factory service information for this?

Did you check the wiring...
