I'm getting an annoying sound that seems to be coming from the left rear wheel every time I start off. It's sort of a click-click that can be made to happen if you accelerate either forwards or backwards from a stop. It seems that something is taking a set. I've pulled off the wheel, checked that everything was tight, changed the diff lube, checked for wheel bearing play, etc. The noise doesn't happen when you rotate the wheel by hand or move the car by rotating the wheel by hand. It seems to require that the driveshaft turn the dif>turn the half shaft to happen. There is no noise on the right side.
As a side note, this noise didn't seem to exist before the engine was pulled to do the ring replacement. Could it be a half shaft joint? Seems to be coming from very near the wheel. Other ideas?
The splines on the axle shaft, where it goes through the hub need to be lubed with anti-seize compound...Slight movement of this fit under very high pressures causes the noise due to rust buildup on the splines :yesnod: Common problem...
If you have aceess to an impact gun,you can remove the wheel and the big axle retaining nut and spray WD40 into the splines,OR,The best way is to back out the axle out of the hub by disconnecting the upper ball joint and lubing the splines with anti-seize :yesnod:
I have a similar noise from the left rear wheel. I have an A4 and I get the noise just sitting in the car and moving from drive to reverse. You can feel the wheel wanting to turn (the foot brakes are on) followed by the clunk. Is this the same thing? :smash:
Not sure if it's the same, but it sounds similar. Probably worth trying the same fix..
Dan
Did yours do the same thing as mine, shifting back and forth between drive and reverse (at idle with the brake on)? Or does yours only do it when actually driving?
Mine's a manual trans, but the problem is most noticeable at a stop...although I think it happens other times...you just don't notice it. BTW, I spayed some WD40 on the big nut and in the holes where the lugs poke through and the problem seems to be much lessened...I think Mr. C5 Tech knows his stuff!
