I installed Quadrapower axle back and was very unhappy, just a lot of noise. Before I scraped it I waited until I installed my headers. The sound now is more of a tuned sound and rowing the gears sounds unbelievable. Yes headers will change the sound !!!
Since you asked , my personal opinion differs from yours. I think a loud street car is an obsolete concept, just like wheel-stands and smoking burnouts. Today, they are only for fun, not performance. So many cars today are very fast without the fish out of water , wrong tool for the job effect, when in slow traffic or stopped at a light. And I see a lot of bucks up cars, traffic and red lights around town.
MY first noise maker was a battery powered plastic toy I attached to my bicycle handlebars, it had a twist throttle and made an engine sound, kind of . A real performance upgrade from cards in the spokes, I thought, and I still remember the smiles from that thing, although little else.
I wasn't always old, I get the deal. I simply enjoy a more quiet and competent approach, over a loud and brash, look at me car. Not that it matters, I am running a good quality axle back exhaust.
I save the look at me, I want to get laid, stuff for my clothes. Perhaps my desire to avoid tickets plays a part.
I also don't like loud motorcycles, but know some are so primitive they still use the old ways, and sound might alert the sleepier drivers.

I have a 03 Z06 with the Magnaflow 15763 kit. Its the Axle back and X pipe.. But I'm kind of disappointed in the way it sounds.
Would getting headers and high flow cats make the exhaust sound better?
I feel like its underwater.... I don't think any system would help.
What do you guys think?
Kyle
I have a Magnaflow exhaust and installing headers totally changed the sound, it sounds so much better now, more powerful but not louder. I always have people asking about the mods I have done to the engine, they say they could tell it's not stock from the exhaust. It is modded and tuned but no internal mods. The last person to make a comment said he could tell it had a cam from the idle sound. It does not. You'll like it.

Perhaps a set of electric exhaust cutouts? I have the DMH brand system on mine and the Corsa Touring cat back system. Best of both worlds.
Had the MF for about a month, Craigslisted it and actually got most of my money back. Sounded really muffled. Went with the factory fit FM system. Didn't like them either- Made my '04 sound like a GMC Sierra.
You know what I'm loving right now, and wish I had done it to begin with? Stock Z06 Ti exhaust. Absolutely perfect- Idle, agressive wind up and like a symphony at full throttle. Car sounds like a Corvette. But... ZERO resonance at 70 or 80.
long tubes will open your exhaust to be louder by how much i am not sure just depends on the brand and design of it i would guess?? i know when i still had my stock Ti on my z06 when i installed long tubes it made it louder but a lot, to a point it was to raspy in the higher rpm's since then i have went with a corsa in favor of my rpm and worlds of difference in sound...much better

Kyle, what type of exhaust sound are you looking for? We design our exhaust systems to get a deep, refined tone which does not hinder the vehicles driveability by being overly noisey. If you are looking for more volume, then it may be worth looking into long tube headers, but this will change the overall tone and introduce some raspiness.

As a matter of fact, the people from Magnaflow that were at Carlisle last year liked the way my exhaust with headers sounded, enough so that my car spent the entire Carlisle weekend in the Magnaflow display.
