My 1997 has a weird charging issue, that I've confirmed with a volt meter ( so not just looking at the gauge )
When I first start the vehicle up, the gauge reads about 10volts. Again I have confirmed this with the volt meter across the battery terminals.
If I rev the car up to about 2k or so ( quick blip of the throttle ) the gauge jumps right up to 14volts and will stay there the rest of the time the vehicle is running, and most of the time even if I shut it off and restart within an hour or so. The cars headlights will not come up before revving the motor up and bringing the gauge up to 14 volts.
I am wondering if this is a common issue with these cars? The car has a brand new battery, and alternator within the last 2000 miles.
WOW thanks for the info, read through that sticky, and realized I probably have gotten the wrong alternator from the parts store ( orileys ) and they've long sent my core in. So is the whole alternator bad/wrong or just the regulator? any way to remedy this short of buying a 300-400 dollar alternator with the right part number?
We have now entered deeper water than I am comfortable in giving any more help... but, good news is that 8vette7 is already involved and can answer your more technical questions...but, I will venture a guess and say you'll need the correct alternator... you might good get a used one from the C5 parts for sale forum or from Marc@Vettenuts IF you need one...
