Default Performance coatings... What are you using???

I have seen posts from various folks out there about who they are using for performance coatings.

I am a big believer in them, and have used them extensively in my GN motor. Just wondering what/who you are using.

I current use Poly-Dyn located in Houston, Texas for most of my coating work.

I have used Jet-Hot for headers in the past. I really like the way Jet-Hot looks on the outside. But for inside the tubes. I use Poly-Dyn's silver thermal barrier coating. The old coating was gold colored which is the same as the swaintech goldcoat. However, Polydyn has made some advancements and has a newer, and better coating with more heat resistance than goldcoat.

I have never had problems with JetHot on the outside of my header tubes. I can't comment as to its durability on the inside, becasue after I put those headers on, I never had to take them off.

I don't coat the outside of a Stainless header. I don't see the need. I coat the inside, and keep the heat inside. I will cite a real world temperature difference that many of you can relate to.

Chromed Pipe for a Harley. What happens? They turn blue. Coat the insides of the tubes at PolyDyn, and no more purple pipes. They look brand new, and stay that way....

Just as a point of reference. I have my headers on my show truck coated by Jet-Hot.

On my GN, I have all the bearings and the piston skirts coated with DFL. I have the Piston crowns, combustion chambers, exhaust side of the turbo, inside of my headers and downpipe. all coated with TBC. I have the inlet side of my turbo coated with another coating which basically is thermal resistant, but is very slick. This is used to coat intake runner and the like and can be used to coat the inside of engines for oil control, and oil return.

Polydyn has a coating they can do on headers in Silver, Black, and Blue. But as many folks have stated, no one can touch the look of Jet-Hot.

One thing that you do need to know about header coatings. In some cases they can only go so far. Why is that. Well, most of the TBC coatings are sprayed. If your heades make some sort of crazy bend, you may not have all the coating deep in that tube. I know most palces do their best, but I just wanted to educate a few folks about Thermal coatings.

I have seen alot posted about them, so I thought I would actually post a thread and get some discussion going about it.

Interesting, thanks for posting the info. How do you coat the headers from the inside or outside without sticking to the other side? Just plug the ends?

The coatings are sprayed on. First everything is cleaned. Then the coating is sprayed on either with a spray gun, or a touch up gun, and sometimes even an airbrush. Any surfaces that need to, can be taped off. Once it is sprayed on, it is cured in an over, and boom, you are done.

That is how the stuff at PolyDyn is done. I don't know how Jet-Hot does theirs.

Jet-Hot offers four different coatings: Jet-Hot Sterling (the most common), Jet-Hot 2000, Jet-Hot Artic and Jet-Hot Marine. They are available in a variety of colors and finishes.

Jet-Hot sprays the outside and the interiors are flow coated.
