I recently had a Vigilante 2800 put in my 99 coupe (3:15 gears) by
Speedworks. When I first picked it up, it vibrated so bad under
acceleration, that I took it right back. They said it must be a "bad"
Vigilante. they replaced it (supposedly), and it was definately better,
but still produces a LOT of vibration when I stomp on it. Before I go
make waves at Vigilante and/or Speedworks, I'd like to know if this
is "normal" or even "common". Please advise.
By the way, according to my GTECH unit my 0-60 dropped from 4.96 sec
to 4.34 sec, so the performance meets advertisements.
Re: Is vibration normal in stall converters ? (kinetic)
Something doesn't sound right unless this is a known issue with Vig converters. If nobody responds here, post this on LS1tech.com, there's a lot more Vig owners there.
Re: Is vibration normal in stall converters ? (kinetic)
Thanks for the feedback. I just got back from Midas Muffler
where I had a good inspection of my exhaust to verify that
it was NOT the problem. I suspect I'm going to learn more about
stall converters than I had planned before this is over. Hopefully,
I'll be able to help somebody else after the dust settles.
Re: Is vibration normal in stall converters ? (kinetic)
I have had a Vigilante 3500 for over 6 months and no problems. Feels like stock when you drive like Granpaw; feels like a bat-out-of-hell when you tromp on it!
I would call Vigilante and see what their opinion is.
Re: Is vibration normal in stall converters ? (kinetic)
It's funny that you mention this..spooky actually  I had the same exact problem with my PT2400 when it was first installed with my 3.42 rear. Nobody understood what it could be...No body . I couldn't sleep..It drove me nuts. I would drive all day and just curse the car and the installer.
When I moved up to the PT2800 my transmission tech who installed the converter showd me that the torque tube spline that mates with the enginewas out of round, That was suspicious since the previous installer took out the torque tube to install the gears and converter. Probably it wasn't aligned just right and that was the vibration. Let me tell you there is NO ROOM for mistakes like that. The torque tube is typically taken out when doing this work but in fact does not have to come down. Since then my trans tech has taken the rear down twice more with NO problems....:D
You also need to besure that the transmission is filled with fluid while the car is running to get all the cracks and crevices in the transmission and converter. THIS IS VITAL!! I used AMSOIL. Ask your installer how he filled up the transmission. It needs to be pumped in while the car is running until it comes out of the feedhole.....Just my 02:D
Re: Is vibration normal in stall converters ? (eastco)
Typically, the suggestion made by eastco, is tried as an attempt to lessen, or rid the convertor installation of vibration.
Shift the convertor's position by one bolt hole (120 degrees)...if it helps but still not satisfactory, try shifting one more hole. That's the best that can be done on that as there are only 3 bolts. They should have made sure to bring the bolts up in stages to full torque that is required.
Maybe they bent the drive shaft if they accidently dropped the differential and tranny while it was still attached to the drive line. That's what sounds like happened to, vestella, in his post above.
Re: Is vibration normal in stall converters ? (kinetic)
I had the same problem. I had a yank 3200 installed and when I picked it up the thing vibrated bad. I asked many questions, and called Yank, they had me call several Installers and nothing but bad installation was the reasons I recieved. I finally rotated the converter around 1 bolt hole and left things loose, started the car so everything could jell together then snuged the converter up. The vibration went away. Just a slight feel of it around 2200 rpms. Not noticable to anyone but me!!!! Rotating the converter solved the problem for me. Hope this helps.
