Well long story short, my reservoir broke on the T connector as soon as I shut the car down and in Chinatown. No idea how long it was leaking but it was dropping for a bit, When I shut the car off the back pressure kicked in and it started gushing out.
I swapped for a new tank and did it in the parking lot with a pair of pliers I bought, now when the car is idle and temp is around 220-230 max I'm getting some anti-freeze smell.
I don't see any leak but am wondering and afraid I blew the head gasket. The coolant did gush in a lot of area's of the passenger side of the motor.
BTW, I did not overheat on the was to Chinatown but did notice the temp being at 230 longer than usual.
Is it just burning off or am I in deep $hit and need a head gaskets?
You're probably OK. It is likely the coolant burning off the engine. Just keep an eye on the coolant level. You've obviously driven the car since the repair. Are your temps normal?
I recently had a boil over problem. I rinsed my engine after replacing the radiator to eliminate the smell.
Incident happened this past Saturday. I put maybe 100 miles on since. I did over fill and had a leak from the cap which I expected, but after the repair during idle the temp max at 237 which is unusual for me to see.
did you bleed the system, here's the proper procedure Start w/ a cold engine
Remove rad. cap
Idle for 1 minute
Install cap
Cycle RPM from idle to 3000 until coolant reaches 210F
Shut off engine
Remove cap
Start engine
Idle for 1 minute
Install cap
Cycle RPM from idle to 3000 until coolant reaches 210F
Shut off engine
Remove cap
Top off
Do you know where the FILL level mark IS? They (GM) hid it conveniently on the front of the reservoir tank...you have to be looking for it... and if it's overfull, that may be why your still smelling antifreeze.
