Default 98 ebcm smoking

As the title says... last night driving home from work I noticed the abs and traction light pop on. This has happened before because my left front speed sensor has a faulty ground, so I figured it was the same thing. I pull into the garage and check the codes as usual to clear it out and notice it says no comm on the tcs portion. I go under the hood to see if something was knocked loose and notice the wiring harness at the ebcm is smoking. I unclipped it and the wiring harness clip was completely melted. So, I'm guessing the ebcm has gone bad (v model)... is it safe to put a new one on or is there a short that caused this to happen? Also, will the power brakes still work without the ebcm? This way I can still drive the car until I'm ready to shell out $1000+ for a new unit. Thanks in advance for any help or feedback!

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it!

Has anyone else had this problem? Can I just replace the unit or does it sound like there is a short I need to fix first before the replacement (because of the smoking).

These are for sale (used pulls) for big money on that auction site. It would be bad to plug a new (old) one into a shorted harness. Your best bet may be to first replace the wiring harness, they are not too pricey. Take your time and get this job right. Good luck.
