Default Leaky butt fix: shims?

The FSM notes the need to check the shim pack in the left housing and adjust as necessary, although in the "how to" threads and videos I see no mention or activity on this.

The job looks pretty straight-forward except for that check - really required?

I also see people using sealant where none is noted in the FSM - needed?

Thanks!

I just did my left side this winter when I was installing my Drop Spindles no shims on the cover, just replaced the axle seal & O-ring and used anarobic sealant on the flange where it sits on the rearend housing, also do not get any of the sealant on the O-ring. My car had just under 9,000 miles & still had the leak. Only issue I had was getting the threaded stud out & I could not get the proper torque spec when reinstalling it so I replaced it with a bolt. My left & right photos.
