I am writing this on behalf of my friend with a C5. His battery died, and he replaced it. Then it died while we were out driving. After it sat for about 30 minutes, it started, but the Volt gauge was reading very low. At that point he had it towed home. My thought was that it was the alternator, but he took it off and had a "box" store test it. The test came back as "Passed". He put the alternator back on the car. I checked his cables, and they all looked clean. However, after recharging the battery, we ran it. I checked the volts from the positive cable on the alternator to ground, and it was only putting out 11.9v. it would actually go to 12.1 when he revved the engine. My gut feeling is still the alternator, but I don't want to tell him to buy one unless I am sure. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!!
NO NOT JUST REPLACE IT !!!!! C 5 alternator are very specific to the car, unless you are absolutely sure ??? Best to have it rebuilt !!! There is a sticky at the top of this page //// read it !!!!!!(do not turn in for core until you know the car is charging as it should,if you go that route)

Thanks for the reply! I guess I am just scratching my head as to why it is only putting out 12 volts. Thanks again for taking the time to reply!
It's good to see someone come here before they do something, then to find out that their core is gone and turned into a bigger headache.
Absolutely! I love this forum. I have a C6, and this forum has saved me soo much time and money. Sure, you do get a lot of differing opinion, but you can always manage to get the a great answer. Thanks for all your advice!
