Optima is good, I have used them in a few cars, but have replaced my 04Z with Walmart Maxx battery. Price/warranty fairs well also.

Default Sears now has a red-top type battery

I was always concerned from the horror stories about battery acid leaking down and destroying the electronics directly below. So when my second battery was dying, I was happy to find that Sears now carries the Diehard Advanced Gold battery that has the same technology as the red and yellow top batteries. The battery's shape is rectangular just like the factory battery, but the giveaway is that the terminals leave the battery on the top and then bend down over the side to end exactly where the original side terminals were. Great specs and no acid leaking concerns.

Well... I kind of ended up with the AGM 78... and didn't. Store had it local so went to grab it. Get there and noticed a pretty big crack around one of the terminals. Sorry, don't want this. Go in the next morning to get the replacement, bring it home... just for fun hook up a volt meter. 6.1V!? Strike 2.
I'm soured now, switching teams. Interstate battery in my lawn tractor has been amazing (4-5 years old, store it hooked up every winter, and every spring starts immediately; no charging, tender, nada).

If you want a Sears Gold, go to KMart, they were $121 plus tax. Mine was June/2016 date code.

I purchased my optima red top on amazon. I paid $130 free shipping and had it in 2 days.

Edit:

Just did a quick search and right now they $143.36 with your prime member ship free 2 day shipping

Sears is changing many things.....went to use my guarantee on a Sears Die Hard AGM...had been there for over 50 years...auto dept. was gone and had to drive to the Ft. Lauderdale store. BUT they gave me a brand new battery for the tax .99 I think.

Interesting write up on batteries - who makes them and where:

Note that the Diehard Gold AGM battery is the Deka Intimidator.

Thanks for all the replies guys - I went with the Advance Platinum AGM 78 size.

Even though the specs said is was a 1/4 inch wider than the Red Top it matched up perfectly...here's the fit if anybody wants to see:

I have a 2004 with the top post style battery. I put the group 34 Autocraft platinum-AGM battery to replace the optima red top. It fit perfect as suspected and so far so good. The fit looks just like Oh1's except being a top post battery. It was $124 out the door with a $50 off online coupon code TRT30.

Bought the Red Top at Sams.. Three year no question 100% replacement.. Red top batteries do not do well on a car with a power drain problems.. Jumping battery multiple times will kill it.. Use a battery Tender when not in regular use.. This cost factor is a be extreme.. It is a expensive battery and there are other choices.. I used it because I did not want a cracked casing to destroy the passenger electronics.. A lot is there.. Saw what a GM battery did because of a cracked casing

Not sure about best aftermarket battery, but here is some info on the factory batteries installed in our cars:

My car is 10 months old, 12K miles.
Yesterday morning, it was dead as a doornail.
Couldn't even open the doors.
No warning whatsoever.
It was at the dealership last week for the 1.5 hr download of their 'Multipoint' inspection...which revealed nothing about the forthcoming
battery failure.

Dealer tells me this is now 'normal', that they 'try' to get 1-1/2 years out of them.

Glad this didn't happen over the weekend, when we were out in remote areas of Arizona on an old Route 66 adventure.

So, if what they are telling me is true, how do you plan for road trips...where you might come out from lunch in an area with no cell service only to find your car is dead and needs to be towed.

OnStar, of course, but if you voluntarily replace the battery every 12 months, there is no warranty on it.

A puzzlement!
