I need suggestions on how to remove the old pully bolt. My impact wrench won't move it and trying by hand (socket & breaker bar) turns the engine. Its an A4, so I can't lock it in gear.
Re: help with under drive pully install (Miles in Michigan)
Thanks for the link. I barrowed a Ingarsol Rand 600 ft/lb impact wrench tonight, so I'll try it tomarrow. May have to wedge something in the flex wheel like they said on that link, as a last result. I wonder what that speical tool looks like? I have to pull the started anyway to get at the crank sensor. I'm also installing a timing module to pull advance off during NOS runs. Thansk again.
I've helped Chad at our shop do an underdrive pulley swap. From what I remember the tool used is a casted piece that has teeth on it that mate with the flywheel and provisions to be bolted in place of the starter. I'm not sure of the tool number but the shop manual should have it. IMO this tool is the key for not only holding the crank in place but is helpful for correctly setting the torque/degree. Once the old pulley is removed you install the new underdrive pulley with the old crank bolt. Tighten to 240ft/lbs... then turn the bolt an additional 120 degrees. With the amount of force used in this step I find it hard to imagine someone attempting this swap without the tool... although I'm sure its probably been done. Next step would be to unbolt old bolt and disgard. Install new bolt. Tighten to 40ft/lbs... then turn the bolt an additional 120 degrees. If you can't locate the tool give us a call tomorrow and talk with Chad... he can tell you where we got our tool for this swap. :)

Thanks for the advice. I tryed the 600ft/lb impack wrech last night after work. No go. So I'll remove the starter today and try from that side. That's a heck of a lot of torque!!!
The plugs are still in and the crank doesn't turn while using the impact wrench. It will turn while using a breaker bar, so I'm pulling the start this afternoon. Thanks for the reply.
Try this method. It worked for one of the other forum members. Get an old leather belt and wrap it around the pulley so it is protected. Then using a large chain wrench wrap the chain over the leather and lock it in place. When you go to break the bolt loose the handle of the chain wrench will stop and lock against the ground or what ever is in the way of it turning and that should give you the stop you need to break the bolt loose.
Good luck
