Do a search in the archives; there was positive discussion regarding the Harlan shift light. LG Motorsports also has a very cool one - a bit large IMO, and pricier, but very slick.
Just a thought. The new G-Tech Pro Competition model has a built in shift light.(4 very bright high intensity LED's) RPM redline is programmable along with a host of other features.
I have one and its pretty cool. Since I have an A4 I don't benefit from the shift light however.
a few weeks ago someone put out two big videos of Corvette forum Vettes. In one of those is an in car at the track video of boweryboy. He has the harlan shift light in the air vents and you can see it flashing in the video.

Re: looking for a shift light (qs_zo6)
The Shift light that we make is a "Sequential" shift light. It has 7 led's that come on as you approach your chosen red line. First green, then yellow then red. when you reach your redline, all of the lights flash at once. It is sequential just like a Formula 1 car, ( they have them in the steering wheel)

If there is enough interest, (5 or more) I would be willing to do a Forum Group Purchase . Let me know.
Now for the big question. I've noticed in first gear with my M6 that the engine RPM is slightly ahead of the RPM indicated on the tach. Now how did I determine this. Some time ago I drove it into the over rev limiter in 2nd to see where on the tach the limiter cut in. Twice on the way into work today I ran 1st up to red line. While the tach indicated approximately 3/8ths of an inch short of the point on the scale where the rev limiter should cut in, the limiter kicked in. I would hope that the tach problem is a matter of physics and the rotation of the needle. First seems to be the only gear affected.
So the question is, will the shift light actually come on where it is set or, will the actual RPM's be higher when the light comes on?
