I purchased my 01 Z06 about 5 months ago, used with 2000 miles on it. Recently started having problems with my trans grinding in Reverse, 3rd and 4th gears. I take it to the dealership to have them look at it. I stop by the next day to see what they find out, and was told that the CAGS had been disabled with a resister and they might have to void my warranty. With the car being used I knew nothing about the CAGS and it being disabled, if I did I would have taken care of that before I took it in. Am I going to get screwed in the matter, and would the cags diabled mess up my syncros? Also, does the CAGS and Reverse Lockout use the same solenoid and would the cags being disabled affect the reverse lockout? Any info in this would be appreciated
I've got my CAGS disabled. I know that my reverse lockout is still working. All the CAGS does is try to prevent you from moving the gear shift from 1 to 2 under certain circumstances. There shouldn't be any way for the CAGS to affect any of the synchro's in the transmission. I think your dealer is feeding you BS. I would check the clutch first to make sure its fully disengaging. It might need some adjustment.
Dealer is feeding you :bs
I have the cags defeated and have had transmission work done under warranty. Specifically, I pushed through the lockout on the track (chasing p cars gives you super human power :yesnod: ) and damaged reverse. The general fixed it under warranty. I'm quite certain there is no relationship between the cags and the reverse lockout. In addition, you say that 3rd and 4th grind as well. How do they explain that?
What a bunch of :bs . I would NOT go back to that dealership. Dealers get a very small fraction of the repair costs when it is performed under warranty ( hence their motivation to try to screw you)
Does Anyone have a dealer recomendation around the Austin or San Antonio area? I'm pretty much willing to take it to any dealership in Texas if need be. How can I check to see if my car has been flagged? I pick my car back up yesterday and had them write out an estimate for what it would cost to fix it out right and it came to over $2500 parts and labor. I think they are just trying to make some extra cash off me.
Well, I spoke with the used car dealership I purchased my car from and he said for me to bring the car to him and he has just spoken to the service manager at some chevy dealer in San Antonio and they will get my car fixed under warranty. He said it all complete BS, and that everyone disables the cags and it's no big deal. thanks for all your help guys. Your great.
Was this with the CAGS eliminator from CAU or adding the 2.2 ohm resistor as per this post; "You can also put a 0.10 cent 2.2K ohm 1/2 watt resistor on the connector to the override soleniod to defeat the CAGS" ? I have heard of no problems with the CAGS eliminator from CAU, but adding the resistor might be causing other problems.
Hi Tim - I know someone at a dealership in Austin. I am friends with a service writer's wife, and she told me he loves taking care of corvettes (he is a big time car guy). The guy works at Champion Chevy. IM or PM me for more information.
If that dealership has not entered into the computer that they are voiding your warranty, then your easiest recourse may be to remove the resister and replug the CAGS circuit, then find a dealer that is willing to take on the warranty work.
I don't believe that the dealer you are going to wants to mess with warranty work and is trying to scare you off.... Probably if they find you are serious about holding their feet to the fire, they will relent and do the work. Personally, I wouldn't want them to touch my car.
Thanks for all the posts guys. Where to start. I called the dealership where my car was at and asked them to write me a statement stating the reason for the denial of warranty. The statement is as follows:
"To whom this may concern on Sept. 16th 2002 a Corvette Vin# ________, was left at our dealership for grinding noise 3rd, 4th, and reverse gears. We were able to duplicate 3rd - 4th but not able to duplicate reverse. We then raised vehicle on lift and prepaired to remove trans at that time my tech noticed that skip shift solenoid had been bypassed and an aftermarket wiring harness had been installed in its place which can allow trans to be shifted at speeds and RPMS not desired by computer. We declined repairs on this trans and slo was declined by area service manager as per GM Service Policies and Procedures which voids a components warranty if it has been altered."
Lee Smith - Service Manager
I even when as far as calling TTC (Transmission Technology Corportation) which is the manufacture of the Tremac T-56 transmission and spoke with a technician. He told me that bypassing the skip shift solenoid has absolutley no adverse affect on the opporation of the trans. And also, that all T-56's have the skip shift solenoid, and that the car manufacture have the option of taking advantage of using the option or not. Vipers have the same transmission, in which the skip shift is not used by the factory, but it is on there.
This is pretty much where I stand now, I called the used car dealership where I purcased my car from. Told him the situation. He then call one of his Service managers buddies at one of the big dealerships in San Antonio. He relayed back to me that it was totaly assinine what that dealership was trying to do to me and to bring my car down to them and they would take care of the problem. So for now all is looking up.
