Default double-din stereo too deep

I'm working on a double-din install, and when I insert the stereo -- at least with the RCA cables sticking out the back -- it ends up too deep. The cables in the back end up hitting what appears to be a plastic wall behind the dash.

I was thinking of just cutting out a large chunk of it, but I wanted to see if anyone knew what was behind that plastic wall, and just how careful I should be while taking a dremel back there to cut out a hole... or if it's a really dumb idea :-).

I'd appreciate any thoughts that you've got!

I hadn't considered the 90-deg RCA connectors. I wasn't sure that they'd all fit, though it's probably worth buying the connectors and giving it a shot. It'll probably save me about a centimeter of depth which might be sufficient to have it go all the way in.

Sorry, I don't have the info you seek.

But I do have the "any thoughts" you asked for, although I often get complaints about the shockingly low quality offered in such thoughts.

I would see if another cable would fit. Without rock solid advice, a cut might create unintended cabin leaks down the road , the car is tightly engineered, dead space might be hard to find, but I guess that is why you asked.

There are 90 degree rca plugs, or, if a return for a different radio is not an option , one could hard solder the wires onto the plug receptacles, or attach to a custom modified cut down plug. Or, bypass the outlet plugs and solder directly into the outlet wires feeding the RCA receptacles inside the case, if you find any room.

By the way, what is the critical dimension, front to back? , in case I go shopping. I am liking the radios that feature cameras, and the big video displays I have seen installed match the car well. I plan on keeping my stock speakers, my hi fi dollars are better spent at home. Plus I can have a few pops while I listen.

My sympathy for your hang up, I know you probably expected some snags, and it shouldn't be hard for someone else to better my advice, perhaps even with an actual answer to your question. They do look nice with a modern radio.

Ha, the thought of making my own "connector" to attach the the RCA socket had crossed my mind! That's definitely on my list of last resorts.

I measured about 6" from the front of the mounting frame to the back plastic wall, and a stereo depth of a hair over 6.5". I was able to stick my tape measure in there and measure the distance between the back of the stereo and the back wall, and I got about 1/4" of space back there.

Granted, I don't know how far the bezel rests in front of the mounting frame, so I don't know how far it'll *actually* stick out... I'm just eyeballing based on the front of the climate control unit. But right now, I suspect I'm destined to have it stick out a bit. I'll definitely give the 90-degree RCA connectors a try though.

your going to be fine as your radio needs to come out more. There is no need to cut or do anything in back

Ah, noted. In that case, I'll sit tight and not worry about it for now.
