double-din stereo too deep
I was thinking of just cutting out a large chunk of it, but I wanted to see if anyone knew what was behind that plastic wall, and just how careful I should be while taking a dremel back there to cut out a hole... or if it's a really dumb idea :-).
I'd appreciate any thoughts that you've got!
Here are some pics:

But I do have the "any thoughts" you asked for, although I often get complaints about the shockingly low quality offered in such thoughts.
I would see if another cable would fit. Without rock solid advice, a cut might create unintended cabin leaks down the road , the car is tightly engineered, dead space might be hard to find, but I guess that is why you asked.
There are 90 degree rca plugs, or, if a return for a different radio is not an option , one could hard solder the wires onto the plug receptacles, or attach to a custom modified cut down plug. Or, bypass the outlet plugs and solder directly into the outlet wires feeding the RCA receptacles inside the case, if you find any room.
By the way, what is the critical dimension, front to back? , in case I go shopping. I am liking the radios that feature cameras, and the big video displays I have seen installed match the car well. I plan on keeping my stock speakers, my hi fi dollars are better spent at home. Plus I can have a few pops while I listen.
My sympathy for your hang up, I know you probably expected some snags, and it shouldn't be hard for someone else to better my advice, perhaps even with an actual answer to your question. They do look nice with a modern radio.

I measured about 6" from the front of the mounting frame to the back plastic wall, and a stereo depth of a hair over 6.5". I was able to stick my tape measure in there and measure the distance between the back of the stereo and the back wall, and I got about 1/4" of space back there.

Granted, I don't know how far the bezel rests in front of the mounting frame, so I don't know how far it'll *actually* stick out... I'm just eyeballing based on the front of the climate control unit. But right now, I suspect I'm destined to have it stick out a bit. I'll definitely give the 90-degree RCA connectors a try though.
