Default HUD Troubleshooting

My HUD has quit working. Is there a separate fuse just for the HUD display? Don't see it listed in owners manual. The display motor is still working so thinking it's not the fuse. When I shine a flash light down at the display I don't see anything. What are the steps to take to determine why I have no display? I've had a towel over the top of the dash, could this have had any affect? Thanks for you help in advance.

You're probably going to have to pull the dash (not a big deal) to see what's going on. If you have power to the cluster, you should have power to the HUD.

It's doubtful any wires came off. The projector itself could have died, though I think that's rare. They're 'fairly' cheap. The power supply on the cluster could have died. That would give you no display even with a working projector. There's any number of possibilities, but I'd lean toward the projector itself or the power supply (easily replaceable in both cases) just due to the fact you have no display.

I suppose it's possible it could be your switch. Have you checked that?

Very doubtful a towel could be an issue either.

If you need a HUD projector to troubleshoot yours or for a replacement, I have one sitting on a shelf. Send me a PM.

Oh and I agree, taking the dash top off is not all that difficult.

Thanks for the responses. Do I have to remove dash pad to have access to off/brightness switch?

No, that's on the left side of your cluster. It's a slide switch that goes up and down. If you hit it by mistake and knocked it down, that would do what you're seeing now with no projector at all.

To remove it, yea, more or less you'd have to pull the dash pad. But that's only if you wanted to check the switches with a meter. I really don't think the switches are known to fail. They're just not something you mess with every day.

My HUD just quit and I would like to check the fuse first, but as Iowa Born said, there is no designated fuse shown in the owners manual for the HUD. Does anyone know where it is?
Thanks

Google "c5 corvette hud fuse" Many links to Corvette Forum posts on that question.

The consensus is that there is no "hud fuse".

More than likely the pin holding the mirror has given way and the HUD is still displaying fine. Start here -> https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...d-display.html

This should give some perspective on performing the repair.

Yes, I read many of those posts and just find it hard to comprehend and that the unit is hot wired in. Some posts indicate they just start removing the system in order to troubleshoot it. Does anyone know which lead or leads come to a reasonably accessible place in order to test whether the unit is getting power. Mine just went dead.

I did have new belts and a power steering hose installed last week and it was dead first time I took it out, didn't notice when leaving the repair shop if it worked then, it was several days later.

They could have killed power for some reason, but can't think of why they would have for those maintainance issues.

Cohdad: I suggest making sure the brightness switch is up all the way, turn ignition key to ON, then look down into the HUD mirror to see if you see the display lit up. You could also hold the position button and watch & listen to see if the mirror motor moves.

If you see the display or hear the mirror motor move, then HUD has power. And if it does have power then you can probably determine if it is the mirror pivot that has broken.

Good luck.

Thank you very much and will do that next time out in it. If it does not have power do you have any advice as to my next step before taking it to a shop. I don't mind getting into it a bit myself, but electronics are not my strongsuit.

I'm not sure looking down into the unit will tell you if its just the mirror. Mine was a mirror issue, but when I looked down into the unit, I couldn't see any display...

I wasn't smart enough to listen for the motor though... Luckily it was the mirror. Honestly, I haven't heard or read about many flat out electronically failed units... If it is electrical, either a fuse (no one knows which one) or the unit will be out. Unlikely to be a wire in the middle. If all of your fuses are good, then the unit will need to come out either way to fix...

A bit late getting back to this thread; but if the HUD problem is the mirror pivot you will see the display by looking into the HUD area from outside. The display is on the driver's side of the HUD unit so you do need to look a bit sideways to see it, but it is there.

And only way to repair the HUD mirror pivot is to remove from the dash. It sounds like a huge task, but it really only takes about 30 minutes. Just takes notes or pictures of what screws go where. Only tricky part is getting the connector off of the emergency flasher switch.

Also I have not read about any HUD unit failing electrically, only the mirror pivots. Doubt that you will find a shop that will repair the pivots, R&R the HUD yes. So if this is the route you take, I still have the fully working HUD unit sitting on a shelf.

A bit confusing, but you have look into the hud, from outside the car, standing on the drivers side, looking towards the defroster duct.

The VFD is on the drivers side, aimed towards the passenger side. It is housed inside a plastic housing. You cannot see it straight on. You have to look to the side where the 45* mirror is (by the defroster vent). There is a small window there to see it. You will probably have to bend down as low as you can, yet be able to still see inside.

This is assuming the movable mirror has fallen off the plastic pins and is no longer picking up the VFD image.

I don't think there is any fuse because it is getting power off the cluster.
If it no longer works, you have to figure out if it is the cluster, or the hud unit itself that gave up.

If it is the mirror, remove, disassemble, and replace the pin with a tiny screw. Someone on here did a write up somewhere on this.

Sounds to me like someone turned the dimmer all the way down.

Finally made some time to investigate this yesterday and the HUD was working fine, just simply came back on. In all honesty I don't remember if I may have been wearing a particular pair of sunglass clip ons I know blocks it the time I thought it wasn't working. HMMMM, I sometimes don't like being an old guy
