HUD Troubleshooting

It's doubtful any wires came off. The projector itself could have died, though I think that's rare. They're 'fairly' cheap. The power supply on the cluster could have died. That would give you no display even with a working projector. There's any number of possibilities, but I'd lean toward the projector itself or the power supply (easily replaceable in both cases) just due to the fact you have no display.
I suppose it's possible it could be your switch. Have you checked that?
Oh and I agree, taking the dash top off is not all that difficult.
Later

To remove it, yea, more or less you'd have to pull the dash pad. But that's only if you wanted to check the switches with a meter. I really don't think the switches are known to fail. They're just not something you mess with every day.

The consensus is that there is no "hud fuse".

This should give some perspective on performing the repair.
I did have new belts and a power steering hose installed last week and it was dead first time I took it out, didn't notice when leaving the repair shop if it worked then, it was several days later.
They could have killed power for some reason, but can't think of why they would have for those maintainance issues.
If you see the display or hear the mirror motor move, then HUD has power. And if it does have power then you can probably determine if it is the mirror pivot that has broken.
Good luck.

Thank you very much and will do that next time out in it. If it does not have power do you have any advice as to my next step before taking it to a shop. I don't mind getting into it a bit myself, but electronics are not my strongsuit.
I wasn't smart enough to listen for the motor though... Luckily it was the mirror. Honestly, I haven't heard or read about many flat out electronically failed units... If it is electrical, either a fuse (no one knows which one) or the unit will be out. Unlikely to be a wire in the middle. If all of your fuses are good, then the unit will need to come out either way to fix...
And only way to repair the HUD mirror pivot is to remove from the dash. It sounds like a huge task, but it really only takes about 30 minutes. Just takes notes or pictures of what screws go where. Only tricky part is getting the connector off of the emergency flasher switch.
Also I have not read about any HUD unit failing electrically, only the mirror pivots. Doubt that you will find a shop that will repair the pivots, R&R the HUD yes. So if this is the route you take, I still have the fully working HUD unit sitting on a shelf.
The VFD is on the drivers side, aimed towards the passenger side. It is housed inside a plastic housing. You cannot see it straight on. You have to look to the side where the 45* mirror is (by the defroster vent). There is a small window there to see it. You will probably have to bend down as low as you can, yet be able to still see inside.
This is assuming the movable mirror has fallen off the plastic pins and is no longer picking up the VFD image.
I don't think there is any fuse because it is getting power off the cluster.
If it no longer works, you have to figure out if it is the cluster, or the hud unit itself that gave up.
If it is the mirror, remove, disassemble, and replace the pin with a tiny screw. Someone on here did a write up somewhere on this.

Finally made some time to investigate this yesterday and the HUD was working fine, just simply came back on. In all honesty I don't remember if I may have been wearing a particular pair of sunglass clip ons I know blocks it the time I thought it wasn't working. HMMMM, I sometimes don't like being an old guy
