In the new Griot's Garage Catalog (#147) on pg. 73 is a brake fluid tester for $42.95. The unit tests the relative content of moisture present in your brake fluid by the amount of current passed between 2 electrodes. Green, yellow or red lights tell you if the fluid is good, questionable or unsafe. Anyone know if this is an accurate way to test brake fluid? Wirth the $43?
At $8 a liter for ATE superblue and an hour or 2 of time I can flush alot of fluid for $43. About 5 times plus my time.
You are only checking the fluid in the reservoir, what about the fluid in the calipers? That is where the fluid is getting the work and would be contaminated first.
Just flush it every 2 years and you will be fine. :)
I buy, no kidding, Castrol GTLMA from Pep Boys for $4.99 per quart! It has the same properties of Motul 600 and is actually better cause it's more resistant to moisture and discoloration.
I've used on the street and racing and have yet to get poor results.
I change the fluid every season...meaning 4 times a year for the car I care about. Otherwise, twice a year. Do it...it's cheap insurance.
Just start with a good fluid and flush every couple years or depending on how hard you drive the car flush more frequently. Nobody I know uses a tester they just flush if any doubt. :p:
