Certainly you can put an LS6 cam in an LS1. You may get 10-15 horsepower from it. But the gains that will take you to Z06 horspower are the LS6 heads. Just to let you know its an aweful lot of work to change a cam for that little of a gain. What are your goals for horsepower gains? Plan on any other work on the motor? If so, what? If you plan on any other motor work being done in the future you may want to consider what matched head/cam package will be best for your expected horsepower gains. For optimum programming dyno tuning is the best option... yes we recommend it with cam and heads/cam swap outs. Give us a call if we can be of any assitstance :)
