I autocross. I need to upgrade from stock to coilovers. The stock suspension causes the car to lean way to much resulting in less traction then I need when cornering when I race. Any suggestions for coilover suspension on an budget?
Put swaybars on the car then shocks. Call Sam Strano, Doug Rippie or LG Motorports
Ok. I'm in CAM S class . Having a hard time figuring out which sway bars to go with. I don't know if the ones I'm looking at are better or basically the same
Which sway bars are installed now?
I use c6z06 bars and shocks on my '98 w/ stock z51.
cheap, hardly any leaning in.
bang for buck, this is hands down the way to go. i had this combo before going to Pfadt first gen coilovers (which are known to be meh) and didnt notice an incredible amount even on the track. so much so that ive debated removing the damn things instead of rebuilding them.
You can buy C5 Z06 stuff used all the time, it's cheap and VERY effective.
C5Z06
Leaf springs
Shocks
Sway bars
c5z leafs, c6z shocks/sways. its like... $400 total? cant remember, but its horrifically cheaper than coilovers. and unless you're tracking the car, you'd be very hard pressed to notice a difference.
i'd wager if you took somebody who wasnt a track rat and gave them 5 rides in a coilover car and 5 in a c5/6z setup car on the street, they couldnt pick them apart. nobody ever said "when entering that onramp, it pushes out when trying to late apex..."

C6Z shocks were valved for bigger rear tires and swaybar of the C6 Z06, I'd stick to what was engineered to work together.
I track my car with stock C5 Z06 stuff, now that I have found the magic camber numbers to run on Pirelli slicks the grip is overcoming the sway bars a bit...but the car is still damn fast.
I have more grip now than in this vid, but still you cant really see it lean much. Car is on 305 Pirelli slicks.

that might be where i got a way with it - i run a square 305 setup, so the c6 components might have been more in line with that. are you on a 305 on all 4? seems you could try the c6 components. at least the sways.. putting those on really made me love the car, and for $200 you cant go wrong. the stuff the base c5 came with is so pitiful that i lost respect for GM after seeing what $400 did to the car. i recognize that $400 * # sold = a lot, but reviewers getting that thing in factory form and shitting on it = costs a lot, too!
edit: im digging the hell out of the Race Render setup!

Bilstein Sports are really good and then lower the car on stock bolts. All the way in the front and give yourself about a 1/4" rake to the rear. Measure just in front of the front jacking pucks and just to the rear of the rear jacking pucks. Make sure you are level from side to side. Align the front with 1/16" of toe out and 1/16" of toe in for the rear. Also, check your ball joints and consider replacement with Moog. Tie rod ends should be checked as well. Clean out the power steering fluid and replace with fresh. Check hubs for play and replace if necessary. For the street you can dial in a little negative camber on the fronts, but be careful you don't do too much or you will wear out the inside edges of your tires.
Mare the c6z sway bars that much better than c5 Z51’s?
90% of people who use their cars for strictly street driving aren't going to notice a difference in "performance"...I've considered "upgrading" from my Z51 suspension, but 1) I'll rarely push it enough to feel that extra 10% performance edge 2) there's no reason to be pushing it THAT hard on the street anyway 3) it'll most likely make the ride even more harsh 100% of the time vs the 10% of the time I'm really pushing it. I'm really liking this whole getting wiser as I get older thing The Z51 suspension is half of the Z06 suspension (same leaf and sway) and the other half is only 10% stiffer...I'm happy with it combined with Bilstein Sports.
