Re: oil consumption help (Twinnie)
My 2000 coupe was consuming oil at a rate of about a quart every 1200 miles when I finally decided to get the new rings. That was last November. The car has done great after the repair. I know it is scary to think about having a dealer tear into your car, but if your consumption is high like it seems your's is, I would consider having the repair done. Chevy's guidelines, at least when I had mine done, was anything over a quart every 2000 miles was excessive.
My only advice is if you decide to get the repair done, check out the dealer and see what experience they have in this repair and talk to other customers to see if they are satisfied. No use taking chances on them messing up the repair - you want it done right the first time.
There have been MANY posts regarding excessive oil consumption on '01 LS1s and LS6s. Do a search. In a nutshell, you should take the car to a dealer to start an oil consumption test, and if usage exceeds 1 qt/2000 miles you can PROBABLY get GM to re-ring it under warranty. Most such repairs seem to have been pretty successful, based on the posts I've seen.
There are only GM dealers here, not chevrolet specific and the most exotic car they may have seen is an opel. I don't trust them with my corvette at all, I'd rather do it myself but that's a nono since the car still has warranty on it.
I agree completely with the two responses you've gotten so far. My '01 had consumption similar to yours, and if I drove it in the higher RPM range it went way up. I just had new rings put in about 500 miles ago, and so far my exhaust tips remain clean, whereas in the past they blackened in no time. Good luck. :seeya
I've notified the dealer and they agreed the oil consumption was high. I'll monitor it for a while to determine the extent of oil consumption but I feel sick already about even thinking about one of those so-called mechanics tearing my baby apart :(
Oh another one, what is you guys' idle rpm, mine is around 800 and it's a 6 speed wich I think is a tad high
I didn't see mention of how many miles are on your car; many of us are finding that the oil consumption issue improves into very high mileage numbers. Mine apparently is still improving at approx. 25K miles. I just did an extrapolation the other day and it appears that when it is ready for it's next oil change that the oil mileage should come in around 3800-4000 miles per quart.
Hhhmmm.....don't know if you realistically can expect too much in the way of improvement at your present mileage. I found that switching from 5W30 to 10W30 Mobil I seemed to help some. I think the 10W30 may be a little less volitile.
Here is the part # 12572717 of an different PCV valve that GM has issued as an attempt to cut oil consumption in those engines with oil mileage issue. You might check with a dealer on this.
It may turn out ultimately that you will have to locate a dealer for a ring install. Lots of members have reported positive rusults after the re-ring job.
I have 01 ZO6 was getting 800 miles to a Qt had oil rings done by Tim jumper Chev in altanta GA, now i go from oil change to oil change and don't have to add any oil i change my oil ever 3000 miles.
