Essential tools for a bottom end rebuild?

Essential tools for a bottom end rebuild?
I'm going through and making notes and purchases for my winter rebuild, which will include all bearings, rods, pistons, etc. I'll ultimately let the shop that balances the rotating assembly take care of final assembly, so piston ring compressors/plastigauge/honing stones/etc probably wont apply.
So I'm here to ask for those of you WHO HAVE REBUILT THE THING BEFORE what tools you found were essential that I'll need considering the above info?
For example, the alignment tools for rear mains, is this necessary?
