About ready to tackle the swap. I have read all the latest Hurst questions and feedback which has been very beneficial. I have Patches install guide and an install guide from a Corvette Fever December 2000 issue.
The question stems from the install in C-Fever. In case you don't have a copy I will summarize briefly. They installed the Kirban, the Hurst, Mallet and the B&M. The install guide goes through the motions first with the Kirban. On page 20 of the install, column 2, 2nd picture, they "apply a thin bead of silicone around the perimeter of the shifter opening to seal it". This is the point when the stock shifter is completely out, apply the silicon and then they bolt the Kirban in.
So... with the Hurst we are provided with a gasket. Is the silicon bead exclusive to the Kirban shifter because it does not come with a new gasket? C-Fever doesn't putting a gasket on the Kirban, it jumps right from silicon app. to torqueing it down. When they comment about the Hurst they do not mention any different install procedures only that you have more adjusments for the Hurst to customize it. I will check Patches guide again, maybe the answer is in there.
Is it an alternative gasket method, maybe a noise reducer? Is it a no-no combining the gasket and a bead of silicon? That might be a dumb question but I have seen people ask "call me dumb, but" type of questions that had me wondering until they were answered.
I applied a half-pea sized goober of silicone sealent to the left and to the right sides of the four holes in the gasket to go between the gasket and the car. My Hurst has no noise or vibration.
I bought my Hurst from a forum member and didn't get a gasket. I tried GM for the stock piece but if you've ever seen the schematics for the shifter it does not list a part number for the gasket. Anyway, I fashioned my own gasket from a thin piece of foam rubber (actually the stuff used for the sound/heat insulation minus the foil). I have no noise or problems with it.
I'd say silcone or the gasket, but hey if you wanna do both go for it. I just don't think it's necessary.
When I installed my Hurst shifter, I just used the gasket that they sent without any other sealer. I haven't had any problems and mine doesn't rattle. The gasket that Hurst provides is much thicker and heavier than the stock gasket GM used which fell apart when I pulled the stock shifter off. I don't think you need the sealer.
