Default Tire Recommendations

I would please welcome recommendations regarding tires for 2004 base Coupe. When I had my 95 I had a set of Kumho Ecsta's that I admit that I was quite pleased with. Now that I am a 2004 the recommendations may differ.

I am a daily driver who is sometimes sporty in my driving. I do not race anymore.

I have read that the run flat type tires are rather loud and did not handle well.

Thanks

My recommendation would be a set of Hankook Ventus EVOs. I have them on my 2003 and they are excellent tires. Price for a set in stock sizes is in the $600-650 range.

for cheaper end - hankook ventus v12 evo2, bridgestone re760, conti DW are 3 i've tried and found good.

Nitto NT555 gets lots of praise on this forum but is garbage, even if you don't race your car.

I have also tried the Hankook V12's and Continental DW tires and like them. I think the DW are being discontinued though.

I had some NT555 and was not impressed either.

Performance: re71r or re-11
Budget: BFG sport comp 2 or comp 2 A/S if you want all season.

I have driven on all of these tires, and had the original v12s, the BFGs are better IMO.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport. About $900 for a set from Tire Rack.

You're right the nittos get a lot of good press- can you elaborate on your experience with them?
Thanks....

My car is cam only C5Z. Replaced a well worn pair of DW with the NT555 (brand new, production date ~10 weeks before install), poor dry traction, poor wet traction. I'm not expecting a budget street tire to hook at WOT, but even at just part throttle on my daily commute I have traction issues on certain pavements. In the wet I have to really baby the clutch to get moving from a stop or it just spins. Tire life isn't really all that great either, I expect I'll get maybe 20k from this set which was about the same as the Conti DW.

I know they have an updated version now, G2 or something, but I probably won't be trying them when it comes time to replace.

I have a '99 with headers and FAST intake, so pretty mild, but I had traction problems with the NT555's also. I didn't notice any issues when normal driving in wet or dry conditions, but when I did push the car in dry conditions in lower gears it would spin easier than other tires.

I currently have the nitto n555 they are over priced and under perform. They wear out fast and do not provide that much grip.

Hankook Evo's are great, until you need them for more than a Prius will do. I've used the following tires in HPDE and auto-x as well as light daily duty:

* Hankook Evo 12 - total garbage, heat up rapidly, become ice skates even on auto-x
* Hankook RS3 - an amazing opposite of the Evos. good wear, amazing lateral grip, predictable traction. favorite mixed duty tire so far.

* Kumho Exta (spelling?) - about like the V12s. fine for a daily, laughed at being pushed.

* Toyo Proxes - fantastic straight line grip, total crap lateral grip, surprisingly good tread wear considering it came with directions on how to properly burnout
* Toyo R888 - god tires, but wear quickly, not for the daily driver

* Sumitomo HTR Z III - for the price, arguably the best tire I've ever had. surprisingly acceptable lateral grip, great treadwear for how hard I was pushing these as an amateur

At any given track day, Pilot Sport and Super Sport are standard, RS3's are very prevalent, and Toyo is generally not too far behind. You may not be pushing your car, but its nice to know that even if something like a rapid braking situation comes up, you're ready. It kind of irks me when people say "oh I dont need a great tire, its just a ___ car." Yea, well, its whats driving the car thats important to me, not the car!

edit: this advice does come from living in the south and CO, but in CO, snow is a game changer. If you put ANY of the above in snow, so far, they dont work at all. At one point I wanted to get the Corvette out of the garage to work, and I couldnt even get it into the street because it had ZERO traction on snow/ice in the driveway/sidewalk. If you're putting a vette in the snow, I cant offer any advice other than having great insurance coverage.

Yes, had them on a C4, for a year before selling it. A good, quiet driver tire that did not give you reason for worry during sport driving

Hankook Ventus V12 evo2. I've I've owned my '98 Vert for 12 years and 55K miles and bought 2 sets of Hankooks. For their price #1 and performance #2 and mileage #3. I don't abuse them and get reasonable mileage. I don't drive the car that much so they seem to last. As a daily driver or for sport driving you may not like how long they last.

how will you compare these to Goodyear eagle f1's. I love my Goodyear's and work well in the rain too even at 85 mph, but I might need a new set and hear the super sports are good too.
