Just picked up an 02 Z06. The driver side mirror doesn't seem to work. And if I manually move it, it falls back down after a little bit.
Any ideas what is wrong?
Thanks
It might be as simple as just pushing the glass so that the pins pop back into their sockets. Or it may be physically broken. When I got my '04 the passenger side was broken. I was able to fix it with some epoxy and it has worked fine.
The way they work is that there is a large "****" on the center that the glass rotates on. There are two stepper motors who's pins grab the top and one side of the glass. Opposite those are another set of pins that tell the computer just where the mirror is aimed for the memory function. On mine, the center **** was broken. I'd think that is the most likely part to break. Not sure what to do if one of the adjusters is shot other than to buy a new mirror.
Just went and played with the mirror a bit. The passenger side one stays pretty still when pushing on it. The driver side, moves relatively easily. So I'm guessing that there is something broken behind there. Is there anyway to remove the mirror part, to see what's up?
So I went and played with it a bit more. If I play with the buttons in the armrest you can hear the motor moving, but the mirror does not move. So the motor seems to be fine, I guess its a clip that must have broken off.

You only need to pry it off of the ***** as gently as possible. There will be a small wire going to the glass portion for the heating element. You must just be careful to pry on it evenly so that you don't break the glass. If I remember correctly i just used my fingers when I had to pry mine off. When you put it back on just snap it onto the large center ball then start moving it around to snap onto the two locating pins then into the motorized "spring thingies." You'll see what I mean by that once you have the glass portion off.

Anyway to change these out?
They're pretty small. I was lucky, in that my large center **** was broken off of the mirror housing. Easy to epoxy back on. I'm wondering if yours just somehow got pulled loose and not broken. But if they're broken I'm thinking you need a new mirror. I tried to source just the motor assembly when mine was broken but kept striking out. Your best bet is to buy a whole mirror from a salvage yard. If you get lucky you'll find one in the correct color and just swap the whole thing. But if not, you can just swap out the guts into your original housing.

Cool thanks so much. I'll play with it a bit more. The good thing is that the mirror stays where it needs to be so I am ok; so I dont want to spend the money on a new mirror. Hopefully I can fix it easily if not, I dont want to be spending a lot of money getting a new mirror painted.

On my 2003 the driver side mirror does a little dance for a while sometimes before it finaly decides to stop where it is supposed to, sometimes for almost 15 seconds.
