Default 2000 LS1 Headgaskets MLS vs graphite

Apparently 98-2001 (or 2002) are suppose to use graphite, the MLS headgaskets which are better, will not work as they will leak water due to some notch issue.

I can't take the risk it worries me.. I found the GM performance MLS but due to this issue would pass...

I found this headgasket kit but never heard of 'engine tech' it is MLS and apparently would work for my 2000

Can anyone advise?

not sure i follow you when you say " due to this issue would pass"?
you can swap graphite to the mls but you will have to check your push rods to ensure proper specs

The notch thing was an issue on early 5.3 truck engines.
Not the LS1.

You can use either the graphite or the MLS on your car.

There will be no issue with the pushrods......

Hmmm, is that for sure? I just was worried about that as I read it on LS1tech and some other LS related forums people mentioning that, and I figured I might as well ask here. Those were older posts.

Anyone else can confirm. It seems to be an issue due to head differences in the pre 2001 engines... some kind of 'notch' that is talked about which would cause water leaks...

Then take your heads off and buy the correct gaskets once you see if there is a notch or not.

I used those Enginetech gaskets and they worked great on my '02. The exhaust manifold gaskets wont work with '01-'04 because of the location of the AIR tube. Not sure about earlier models.

Maybe you should by-pass Rock Auto Parts, and go directly to a GM parts supplier such as Cultrag Performance, a CF site sponsor....

contact a site vendor
someone like Texas Speed they will help out.
I would not use the graphite due to the effort to clean them off should
ever change heads etc. I bet they were a pain to get surfaces clean.
MLS gaskets are what GM uses for all of the SC setups and will serve you well.

believe it or not, a lot of reputable builders use ls9 gaskets on high hp forced induction build regardless of the bore discrepancy between the ls1/6 and ls9

LS9 gasket has more layers and the same thickness made for a boosted engine.

My '01z had graphite. Bitch to clean that off after pulling the heads.

Went with GM MLS and no complaints.

You can likely go with the new GM MLS head gasket, cheap and proven. GM part 12498544.

http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation...placement.html

You can likely find out of if you have the notch by the casting # on the head if you have an early C5. I know on 2 2000s we did not have the notch, and used MLS gaskets.
