Since adding headers and an LS6 intake, it seems like my stock cats are being overwhelmed, since slowing down after a WOT run results in a nasty egglike exhaust stench in the car. So, someone suggested I get the Randomtech cats to fix this. (By the way, headers and exhaust system thoroughly checked, no leaks)
Now, my questions are :
Has anyone else had this problem?
Did high flow cats fix it or was it tuning that fixed it?
What's the difference between the C&L hi-flow cats and the Randomtech ones, other than the $325 price difference EACH?
I checked on CarSound cats the other day. Polished SS only 120 each my cost and they are rated to flow 5.9L engines single so dual they should do about anything :yesnod: They are very loud almost like sraight pipe. I have installed a few on S/C Lightnings and needed more muffler..
TUNING :yesnod: The stock cats (if undamaged) flow fine, will support much higher output than yours with minimal backpressure or loss. FWIW we dyno'd my car with open headers and got 425 rwhp. With stock cats and full exhaust system we got 412 minutes later. On a milder car the exhaust will not take away even that much HP. Spend the money on other mods, you don't need different cats.
I would suggest tuning as well. The car is programmed to go to a richer air/fuel ratio at WOT. This is normal and desired for best power output. But this also means you're pushing more unburned fuel through the Cats. That's probably the reason for the smell. From other posts I've seen here, putting on headers tends to result in richer A/F ratios than stock, so a good tuning can probably get you more power and decrease unburned fuel. I don't think the smell will totally go away, but it may be improved.
