Hey guys - just bought my first c5 over the weekend after years of LS Fbodies. It's an 02 zo6 with 80k miles on the clock.
I'm having some issues with the HVAC system and didn't really get answers in my hour or so of searching the forum last night, mainly because I didn't know what key words to use....so if anyone has good threads or search tips or if this topic has been covered I'm happy to do more homework....
onto to the problem...
the display is on its way out and is barely visible (probably just need to replace)
the passenger temp control doesn't seem to work. After playing with it for a while it seems both sides spit out the same temperature air and that's based on the driver side control. Both sides will fluctuate between a hot heat and cool air (granted its 4x* outside)
when I try to turn the a/c on the light on the a/c button comes on for about 5 seconds then turns off.
I cant hear the compressor engage when cycling on. I was looking right at it and it doesn't make a noise or anything when cycling on. IIRC the front will start to spin when you engage the A/C. The belt seems to be riding fine and doesn't have any wear or make noise so I don't think it's locked up but maybe I stand to be corrected.
Any help or or insight would be appreciated. I can absolutely take things apart and test electrical if I can get a better idea of what might be going on. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to dive into that link today and try the display fix this week. My unit is just barely visible and I skimmed through that thread and should be able to touch that up with my sauder iron. I guess I'll try an advanced auto recharge kit for the ac and see if it holds. If not I'll take to a shop for vacuum and leak test. This gives me a starting point so I'll post with results from what you guys recommended so far.

The air conditioning does not operate at temperatures below approximately 35°F to 40°F (2°C to 4°C). The light on the A/C button will flash if pressed when air conditioning is not available. It seems your A/C might be just fine. Your outside temps are right borderline with the system's operational limits.
In any case, I wouldn't blindly add refrigerant to it without checking pressures (both, high and low) first.

When the passenger side is set to the 12:00 (center) position, the driver and passenger side are both set to the temp selected by the driver's side, then the passenger can vary his/her side slightly up and down if desired. This is how it works, unless the driver is set to full up (90°F) or full down (60°F), then the passenger setting will have no effect.
The display will not change with the passenger adjustment.

Haha...Pounder your point is clear. Fortunately I do have one in the glovebox but was thinking this was going to be more of a troubleshooting type of issue where the owners manual wouldn't help me. I will do some reading in there tonight/this weekend around this climate control system so I understand how it works a little better. I made the assumption that it was like any other dual climate HVAC I've owned/experience and clearly that was not a good assumption.
On the other hand I used the advice from Smoken1 for the control unit and it's as good as new! It only took me about an hour total to remove everything, solder it up and test so that saved me some big time money.
After I read through the manual on this system I'll make some decisions on what makes most sense to try next. Thought I'd update on progress so far. Thanks for your help fellas.

I have always read all manuals for every car or truck I have owned and was a Tech for 25 years. When I read about the auto air in my 99, I was surprised how different it was compared to other vehicles. I was NOT trying to be a as* !!! I also fixed my display, had it out already and took me 10 minutes to fix
