from what i have learned or have been told there is an antilock device when the brake is applied to not let the rpms "skyrocket" to the top so the tires spin... some vettes this happens on some don't, now dont get me wrong a higher gear and a converter will help alot, but a buddy of mines car would still have problems doing a smokey burnout Simple thing
this is exactly what is happening.... there must be an antilock device... when the break is applied the engine does nothing... My last car was a 3.8L mustang... I could hold the brake down, gun it... the rear end would lift up a bit... and as soon as the tires broke traction my rpms would almost redline and I would leave a cloud of smoke in the streat that would choke a mule... is there a way to unprogram this antilock thing ??? this is killing me here...
can I just get a smoke show with my vette!!! :(
PS: Thanks a ton guys for talking with me on this... you are all very helpfull, I'm sure after I am done being a newbie (and a new vette owner... my 3rd day now!!!!) I will be able to help others out... for now

Well I havent figured the way out yet, beside line lock so you dont have the foot/pedal pressure, and im not sure if LS1 Edit can do anything with lowering the torque Managment i havent played with it enough yet..... But did you try and do it in 3rd gear then shift down to 1 after the tires brake loose, it works for me and a few buddies of mine.........
I never heard of anything that limits the engine rpm when the brakes are applied - I seem to have no problem doing a burnout at the track in the water at 4500 rpm. If the traction control is on in the water the car just dies (happened to me a few times by mistake) Try it in the rain and see what happens :)
I'm such a freek with this new car... yeup!! I read your thread... went out side and tried it out...
with the TControl on... the engine just dies... took it off and RPMs will start climbing very slow... did the 3rd gear thing and got the tires spinning (only about a half a mile an hour.... but they were spinning... droped to 1st... rpms went up a bit.... but they just won't really get going.... they will spin real slow... mind you I am holding the break real hard... after pulling to first I can get the rpms to about 2.5k -- 3k with the tires rotating SLOWLY (no smoke) ... the engine will give me no more juice thou....
(the car is holding back... if I could get the RPMS up in the 4000's 5000's with the break on I would light up the block like crazy!!!)
maybe if I let off the break at this time either A... the RPMs will tear butt or B... the computer will wait for the tires to catch and then boogie...
pisses me off a bit because I could put on a better smoke show with my 3.8L v6 mustang.... (the VETTE would **** all over it on the road thou)... but as far as showing off once in a while, it does look kool.... damn computer holding up my RPMs... the mustang has nothing as far as computer control... if you hold the break and gun it... you will eventually loose traction... the car doesn't know any better so you can get the rpms up in the 5500 range and the tires are smoking like crazy... I used to even redline the car at a stand-still (with the break on)... and rear wheels just scream... (but other than that the car was slow as poopie... got beat even by a maxima!!!) ....
glad to be in the vette club now
thanks for that tip.... I am going to mess around with it a bit more....

PS: what would be a better first mod a T/C or 3.73 gears... I have a stock 98 A4... just wondering which would give me more bang....
PS: Is the transgo shift kit the same as going to my vette performance center and getting them to adjust my shift points and CPM ....
sorry for all the ?'s ... just an excited new vette owner (finally!! ughhh... I was hating driving that 3.8 v6!!!)

Actually in a vette i hate to say it for the wallet but its best to do both mods at the same time it will save you on the Labor since they are both in the same location..... If your only able to do one, i would have to go with a T/C considering its a bit cheaper and you will be able to spin the tires down the block!!!!!! I would look into a Percision Industries or Yank...
Regarding your Trans-go shift kit question.... It seems to be a matter of opinion to most everyone on here, just for the record I do have one, and I do love it, I tried the bumping of shift points and firmness using the computer but nothing hits as good as a transgo shift kit, I can get a continous burn out from a dead stop to end of second gear right on thru the shift with my set-up and transgo shift kit (2 spacers)... but again if your going to be hard driving the car and racing it alot go for it, if not the computer tuning might be the way to go for ya....... Hope this helps
with my 2002 A4 (when I had the 3.15 still installed) I could easily powerbrake with the car in the Competitive Driving mode. There was no "hold-up" on engine power/RPM.
Now woth my 3.42's... I don't even need to powerbrake.
If you just want to "smoke em up" here's an old trick from longer ago than I care to remember.
Run a hose the same size as the windshield washer hose to the rear in front of one or both rear tires. (Use a t-fitting to spray both tires) Also use a t-fitting next to the washer reservoir with one of the nipples capped off. When you want to go somewhere and smoke em, switch the hose that goes to the windshield wipers for the one that goes to the rear tires.
When you feel the urge, hit the button for the washers. You will need to purge the line of air the first time but after that it will spray washer fluid (or water if you prefer) onto the tire tread and bingo, instant burnout. :D
Its the cheapest way to get the effect your looking for.
This isn't rocket science. All you need to do is apply the brake between 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down. Put it in D and SMASH the gas. Don't ease into it, just smash that sucker down to the floor (watch it so you don't start bouncing off the limiter). But you need that initial KICK to come on fast to break the tires loose, then you can feather the gas to avoid hitting the rev limiter. My last vette was a 97 auto with 2.73 gears and I smoked those tires like no bodies business.
And if for some reason their is something going on with the ABS that is not allowing you to do a burn out, invest $200 in a line lock kit. That should take care of any problems with the ABS limiting your wheel spin, and it's far cheaper then TC/GEARS/SHIFT KIT.
