I bought a 98 coupe that had 83,000 miles on it. Everything worked fine until approx. 3 weeks after I bought the car I was on my way to work and the High Trans Fluid temp light came on. I checked and the temp was 250.
Upon slowing down the lowest the temp got was 220. After apprx. 15 minutes I noticed a difference in the way the car was shifting. Upon reaching work the engine was racing and the car was barely moving. I had the car flatbedded to a Corvette shop and was told that the tranny was blown. There were no warning signs or anything. Anybody have any ideas what could have possibly happened . Since there is no way to check tranny fluid without lifting the car I don;t know if it was low on fluid or not. Thanks
It's a little late now but checking the tranny fluid should have been done (along with a lot of other checks) before you handed over cash for the sale.
Unless you personally know the history behind the car and with 83,000 miles the tranny could have suffered a LOT of abuse.
Before you spend another .01 you need to talk with a C5 transmission expert like Steve Atkins in Fort lauderdale...he can help!! :yesnod: Reach him at www.eastcoasttransmissions.com If it's a rebuilt transmission you need Steve can help yo understand everything...:D
Same thing happened to a friend, his car responded the same way. I think he had about 45K on his 98. I know he did like to auto X sometimes. I have not talked to him about the solution or verdict yet.
We have a 98 A4 that is raced 2-3 times a week at 3 different tracks and there is now 55k on the odometer. Tranny fluid is flushed & filter changed every 20k miles and I have dual tranny coolers. I know it will give up some time, but so far it's going strong!! We abuse this tranny far more than most. Heat and old fluid are the tranny's biggest enemy!! (Just ask Vinces tranny guy, he see's them all!)
Thanks for the reply. Everything was checked on the car before I bought it. Everything including the tranny and the fluid appeared to be normal and operating normally. I have them putting in another tranny as we speak. Thanks again
Mine grenaded after braking some tabs off of a Al housing internal to the transmission. Did a rebuild on extended warranty. Considered an aftermarket bullet proof tranny, but couldn't part with 3k.
good luck,
john
