I installed one on my '03 to keep the oil vapors in the PCV system from entering the intake manifold. You would be surprised how much oil the catch can collects in just a few hundred miles. And that is oil that does not get into the intake.

because the stock PCV system on the early LS 1's didn't work great and oil is induced in the intake. My awesome condition 99 had a lots of oil in the intake when I changed to a LS 6 intake at 55,000 miles !!!! (mine uses no oil in 4000 miles, when I change it)

The pre-2001 "LS1" style PCV setup is notorious for a lot of oil blow into the intake. When all C5s went to the "LS6" setup in 2001 - that includes Z06s and base cars - they all got the LS6 PCV style setup which has been shown to alleviate a lot of the issues the earlier setup has.

Obviously there are tons of 1997-2000 C5s rolling around on the LS1 style setup, but if you have the chance to properly install an oil catch can or upgrade to an LS6 intake it's worthwhile.

you have 2600 posts here and you havent read one about the PCV systems in pre '01s? the fact his mechanic knew enough to suggest that would lead me to believe the guy knows his LS's.
