Recently had the LG G5XE cam installed and ported and milled the stock LS6 heads on my 2004 C5 Z06. A couple things I've noticed:
1. Sometimes when starting up the car it gets on the verge of not starting. Almost like stuttering before it fully turns over. (Imagine trying to turn on a car with no gas in it, kind of like that)
2. 2nd gear, any time under 1500-2000rpm, I get a ton of surging/bucking. I've noticed in third gear at that rpm it's not as bad. I have noticed that even before the cam I would get that surging/bucking in 2nd gear. Is there something maybe wrong with my transmission? I remember in my 2004 GTO I could idle around a parking lot in 2nd gear no problem at all. It's quite annoying on the freeway in bumper to bumper traffic when I just want to keep it in 2nd gear the entire time.
I thought these were more traits of a big cam, are these normal for a smaller cam like the G5XE?
It's all in the tune. A tune after a cam can make or break the daily driving experience. Tuning for WOT is easy, it's the part throttle driveability that is tough.
That's why I am not a fan of dyno tunes on a car driven on the street--All they do is run it up to WOT in 3rd gear and check the AFR and timing only there to produce max HP and TQ
A street driven tune addresses all your starting and P/T drive ability
All the symptoms you describe are easily corrected by a tuner that will take the time to address your issues with a street tune----
It is all in the tune. I just had my car road tuned, two weekends ago, for that same reason. Idle would not hold when the clutch was pressed in. Always died. And I had surging under 2k Rpms at every gear. Now idle is great, perimeters where modified to cruise at every gear 1500-2000rpms , even cruising at 40mph in 6th gear
I just got a cam installed and it has a high idle. It only has a cam and is only a street car. I can let off the brake and get to 20 mph. Shifts out of 1st on its own. Going back to get it tweaked down.

Have you considered a higher stall torque converter?
