I recently discovered a tear in the outer CV boot of my 2000 Coupe, and the subsequent grease shower all over everything near it. From my research, I believe I have 3 options.
GM OEM Replacement outer boot - the cheapest option
Remanufactured axles from an auto parts store
GM OEM complete axles - the most expensive option
The car is 17 years old so replacing only 1 boot seems like I might be doing this again someday. The inner boots are not available either, from what I see. I've heard that the remanufactured axles have boots that are softer than OEM and will balloon at high speed. I've started doing track days and the car routinely sees 130mph+. Complete axles are almost $600 for the pair, but I don't have any reason to believe the axle I have is contaminated since I inspect the car fairly regularly.
this is the factory boot, the number of pleats in the boot is the big difference, its much stiffer.
I would just replace the boot with a genuine GM boot and be done with it.
auto part store axles have the cheap boots
This is super helpful, thank you! I think I will replace both outer boots while I have everything apart and make sure everything is clean and well greased. If the inner boots end up leaking I will have to figure something else out. Thanks!
