Default brake pads

I have changed many brake pads but what is/or the term bedding the pads referring to ? How is it done?

Just did this last weekend.

What I understand is that the newer pads come with some sort of coating that through the bedding process, transfers some of this to the rotors.

I bought the Hawk pads and they came with bedding instructions. Look it up for accuracy and for the pads that you get, but what I remember is something like this:

1) 6 - 10 moderate stops from 35 mph.
2) 2 hard stops from 45 mph.
3) Let cool.

Also, during install they recommended using fine sand paper to "clean" old deposits off of the rotors.
