2002 C5 that is new to me. Auto trans. No known tinkering by previous owners.
Car runs fine. I turn it off. As soon as I turn it on again I hear crickets under the hood and the temperature climbs steadily into the danger zone. When I begin to drive it starts going down quickly. Cricket sounds get lower as I drive. Next time I get into the car it starts and drives fine, but as soon as I turn it off and back on the same thing happens.
AC works fine. Volts don't drop. Temp runs under 200. No problems steering. So I don't think its an AC compressor, alternator, water pump or power steering pump.
A little bit of rough idle when parked but nothing else seems to be going on. Stealership said the check engine code (P0410) showed a bad AIR pump and that it needed to be replaced because that was the problem, even though i disconnected at the alternator and felt air being pushed through. I paid the diagnostic charge and fled the stealership without any repairs.
I stopped at the shop this morning. They immediately showed me the harmonic balancer. Its wobbling pretty good. So I guess thats the culprit. I expected that was the likely suspect. Funny how the Stealership never said a word. They just wanted to charge me $600 for a new AIR pump that is still working.
Is there anything else I should have replaced down there while they have half the car apart?
A new Powerbond harmonic balancer and a couple pulley replacements while they were down there and now i'm squeak free and not overheating. Idle is a bit smoother now as well.
