Default Problem installing Z06 Brake Ducts. UPDATE ....PICS!!!!

OK...some of you know about the boo boo I had a few weeks ago with the convertor shield flying up and hitting my right rocker panel before the rear wheel. Well I got the Z06 brake duct kit and figured that while the car is in the body shop I would have them install the kit since I just cant bring myself to cut the car :) The problem is that they say the duct is hitting the right tire on the part where the duct bends to clear the front of the tire and it is rubbing the tire. They say that there are some heat shields under there that they could bend to get the duct to sit back further but they dont want to do that and want me to come down there and take a look at it before they do anything else to the car.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there something that they are missing? This is not Jim-Bobs country corner back yard body shop, this is a highly recommended place that does many high end cars. I know that the Z06 has bigger tires and that these ducts clear those so I am really stumped here.

Thanks.

**** Finger,

I have installed about 25 sets of these and have never seen that problem.
The only thing I can think of is that they mounted the scoops to far back and that is pushing the duct into the wheel. Hope that helps

Any questions don't hesitate to give me a buzz

Thanks, Brian

I did my install 2 weekends ago. I cut my hardtop, put some sound-deadening/absorbing material on the wheel wells and put everything back. Really, there is nothing to it. To cut it I used a saw that uses a sharp cutting bit - it cuts like butter.

Now the problem that I could only see with this is that they cut your wheel wells wrong and that forces the duct to bend towards the wheel. Really, there is no way that somebody can make a mistake on this because you use the wheelwell screw to hang the duct behind the wheel. If done right, the wheel well will actually sit the duct away from the tire. I cut my wheelwells but i did not get that 'factory look' so i went out and bought a set of new wheel wells for the Z06. It might be hidden behind the wheel but Im very meticulous about my work so I decided to buy new ones. But since I was saving on labor (people were asking $250-up to install these) I still saved $$ by doing it myself and still got some sound-deadening material on my wheel wells.

Keep us posted.

Well this was my first thought and I called them back and asked them how far back they cut it and they said barely an inch from the door seem. They used the template that came with the kit from WCC. It all lines up it just seems that the duct itself is rubbing on the tire where it bends around it.

I am going down there tomorrow afternoon and the worst I can think is that we might have to cut the duct a little shorter on the area where it goes into the grille piece... I dunno.. that is just a random thought.. I need to see it in person.

Thanks for the offer to call...if you dont mind I will write your number down and maybe have them call you if they need to after I visit them tomorrow, if that's OK with you.

Dear ****,
I did the big cut 2 weeks ago. My kit came from WCC, also.
My job came out perfect looks just like factory, lines up real nice.
If the car is up in the air the rear wheel will kick in a little and look like it is almost touching, but once you lower the car everything is fine and dandy.
my 2 cents

Same observations here when I did mine. Have them set the car back on the ground and then look, should clear just fine. :yesnod:

Ditto with Paulsworld and 16again. I too thought they might rub when they were first installed and the car was on the lift. Once on the ground, clearances were just fine.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I called the body shop this morning and passed on what you guys all said. They did the left side and after they put it back down on the ground they said there is a 1/2 inch of clearance. They havent installed the grille on the right side yet since the rocker gets shot tomorrow to fix the original boo boo that it went in for. Should be all done and back together Thursday AM.... I cant wait!

Glad to hear it all worked out. I was confident the clearance issue would end once the car was on the ground. Looks great, nice pics.

BTW, I'm having a heck of a time finding an internet site where I can upload my pics so I can post pics on this site. I know this has been beaten to death and I've found countless threads but, this forum no longer supports member uploads and I've tried two different piture web pages without success. One site only allowed url's for Ebay and the other site only gave 5mb of space per day. I could post 2 pics for about 10 minutes before I exceded 5mb. Everytime they were viewed on the forum, my free 5mb was utilized. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
