Default Mystery noise under car

It's a 99 FRC. Going over bumps, or road irregularities, I hear something that sounds like there is someone under the car with a small hammer, tapping on the floor pan. It's over towards the passenger side, near the front of the passenger seat. But I will also add that it sometimes sounds like it is originating a little more forward, or even towards the driver side around the front of the center console (but still under the car).

Today I had it up on a lift. Me and another guy poked, prodded, used flashlights and other things, looking for any sign of something loose, and found nothing. For a while, I thought it may have been the oil pressure sending unit which I dropped down behind the engine while installing it (the act of stupidity is documented here in another thread). I pondered if that part was maybe somehow bouncing around under the car, maybe on the exhaust system, or somewhere else, and when things moved/flexed a bit under normal driving, maybe the sensor was making contact with the belly of the car. Wild guess, I know, but I'm stumped.

Ideas?

Any one?? I would check in storage compartments, lift struts, trunk hinges, etc as many of these noises telegraph and are hard to say from where they originate. (On rare occasion I hear a similar noise as you describe so interested in your posts responses) PS check your cats if ceramic product used is breaking down inside. Can check with rubber hammer by tapping cats and listen if anything is rattling around inside...just a thought. Good luck.

When I get the car up to do the front tie rod ends soon, I'll check the sway bar end links. They aren't really accessible from beneath.

I did mine from underneath - but when I had the wheels off recently I saw that access was a lot better that way...

New outer tie rod ends and links went in today (alignment in the morning). Noise is still there. :banged:

I read on the forum that a sticky rear hub spline can cause that type of noise. You can spray WD40 on the exposed spline from under the car. Sorry I can't be of more help, I did it to my C5 years ago as a preventative and never had the problem ocure. If that cures the problem you may want to use a more permanent lube like motorcycle chain lube. It sprays thin and then seeps in and thickens.

Cheers, Curt
