Yup. Second gear syncros are gone on the vette and it only has 5300 miles on it. I don't powershift it at all and I always grab second gear firmly. Never scratched it. I noticed it was going cause when you downshifted from 3 to 2 at anythign over 20 mph, it would grind then go in gear. And if you were WOT and tried to shift it at 4, 5, or 6000, it would grind and not go in.
Here is a question yall could help me with. I was messing around the other night in it. It was wet and I wanted to see what this thing would do without traction control. So I turned it off and mashed the throttle from a dead stop. Needless to say redline came quick. So I pushed in the clutch and went to grab second (tires still spinning) and second gear wouldn't engage. It seems that if the tires are spinning, second gear won't engage. But, if I launch it with traction off at 2500 and spin em to 5500 and then the tires grab and I shift at redline, it grabs second gear and burns the hell out of the tires. Why is that? Sorry for the long post.
If you do not track the car then you definately have some manufacturer problems. Just be lucky you have a warranty to cover it. I seriously doubt the spinning you were talking about had anything to do with it. Sorry about your trouble. :nonod:
Talking to the mechanic at the local Dealer about my 4th gear syncro's, he mentioned that they had two cars in for 2nd gear at the same time. And that they had seen it before. Not an everyday problem, apparently but often enough. You shouldn't have any problem having it fixed under warranty.
I don't understand how you are spinning the tires that much with traction control on. Mine falls on its face if the tires spin with traction control on.
I would try to get the dealer to install the m12 zo6 trans when in under warranty. I was going thru the m6 seemed like every couple weeks until the m12 came out it has closer ratio in the bottom gears so not as much load while shifting. The trans is also cheaper from GM than the m6 and it is a direct bolt in.
Do you drive with your hand on the shift lever? Or do you make the shift and put your hand back on the steering wheel? I had the 4th gear syncros in another car go out. When I took the tech for a ride to demonstrate the grinding problem, he asked me if I always drove like I was, with my hand on the shift lever. He told me that it causes excess wear. Not sure if that is true or not, but I don't drive that way anymore and haven't had any problems since.
Got the vette back today. Replaced first and second gear cones, and snycros. And some teeth, and a couple of other things. They said it was operated beyond it's design parameters. I say :bs cause it is bone stock right down to the air filter. If this tranny can't hold 288+ to the wheels, then why did ford put it behind the 03 cobras and dodge put it behind the Vipers?
My 01 Coupe tranny had third gear go at 6000 miles. My dealer got me a new tranny. I think it's safe to say that the C5 tranny has some weaknesses. Too many people on the forum have reported this.
Oh yeah. It was under warranty. They said it was a one time fix though. I guess these trannies aren't unbreakable. Yall who had this problem fixed, has it ever come back or did it get fixed right the first time?
Mine popped out of 1st, 3rd, and 5th at about 3K miles. Dealer fixed, then synchros went at around 18K (5th gear). Dealer fixed and has been fine since then.
That's an interesting comment above about driving with your hand on the shifter. I do that a lot, but I don't know that just resting on the shifter would do much. It's not like "riding" the clutch where you are putting forward motion on the clutch pedal and slightly disengaging the clutch. Here you are just putting downward pressure on the shifter and it links to the transmission in the back, so that shouldn't hurt.
What is your Dad doing letting a 17 year old drive the hell out of his Vette? :p:
My 14 year old cant wait to drive mine...One m ore year and he get a permit..I love my boy...But! He will never see the likes of that car on his own. The only time he will drive it is with me in it...
I am quite sure you drive your dads car differently on your own...:D

Dale,
I'm just waiting for my syncro's to die so I can try to get the M12 replacement.. I know it's a direct bolt in, but are there any computer programming issues since the first gear ratio is different? Speedo issues in first gear? Etc???
My dad knows why I like to drive his car and he knows everything I do with it. He knows I've raced it and he knows I like to play with it. This is kinda our car (more his though than mine :) ) cause we have both wanted one and we are both very tight and close. He does drive it a little differently than I do. Only takes it 3000. I figure that a once a week trip up to redline through four gears ain't that hard on it. :D
Did you (bother to) blip the throttle while the clutch was in doing this downshifting from 3rd to 2nd?
Synchros are just like little clutches. But instead of holding TQ, they adjust the speed of the driving gear to the speed of the driven gear. Since the gears are light in weight, it doesn't take much energy to spin up/down the next gear.
Older transmissions (crash boxes) had no synchros, and the driver had to double-clutch to avoid crashing gears teeth. Clutch in, gear to neutral. Clutch out, blip throttle. Clutch in, select gear, clutch out. Both up and down required the driver to hold the engine at the destination RPMs shiel the left foot was double clutching.
Synchros allow you to perform downshifts as: clutch in, blip throttle, shift from gear to gear, clutch out. And upshifts as: Off gass, clutch in, shift gear, clutch out, ongass. Just don't forget to blip the throttle on downshifts!
Eating synchros is a sign of improper driving technique.
I have a question... How can you tell if your synchros are going out??? and when bliping the throttle when downshifting does that burn the clutch? I was told to keep my foot off the clutch as much as possible... I would like to know the best techniques that are best for my car...
