I recommend either using a plastic ice scrapper, plastic razor blade scrapper (sold at Autozone), or VERY carefully using a metal box cutter blade taking your time not to gouge anything. I used the box cutter blade when I did a DOD delete on my G8 but I was extremely careful. Should I ever take the heads off my Corvette, I will be using a plastic scrapper.
Under no circumstances do you want to use any abrasives (sandpaper, scotchbright, 3M gasket remover wheels). All of these products will put abrasive grains in your engine which can score your cylinder walls and bearings.
