Default Thermostat Question

I am wanting to change out my stock thermostat and put a lower degree on in its place. 2 things: 1. What degree would be the best replacement and 2. Do I go back with the same coolant as provided from the factory? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I like the 172/178 from breathless performance. But note that you will either have to get your car tuned, or use a fan controller to manipulate your computer to turn the fans on earlier.

Yes you will have to use the same coolant. We have aluminum radiators, I forget the type of coolant we have to put in, but like all other corvette parts its special.

If I'm correct, they use Dex-Cool coolant. I think a 180 would be a nice one to have.

What about a 160 degree? Is that too low?

I have a 160 and think it's too low. I'll probably go to a 180 soon. I've had my fan turn ons changed to 1 on at 190 off at 185, 2nd stage on at 200 off at 195. With the 160 I never reach the turn on unless I'm sitting in traffic for a long time.

I read someplace that the LS1 runs best in the 190 - 200 range.
