Hello CORVETTEFORUM people! I have a noise coming from the drivers side rear wheel. When I'm going slow I get a light tapping, knocking, popping sound. When I go slow and apply the brake, the sound stops as if it was the brake, but it's not. Things I have done so far, took the brakes off, no cracks, plenty of material, regreased the pins and sliding parts, greased axle splines, checked all nuts and bolts, greased all joints with syringe grease fitting, suspension spring too, tried to shake the tire to see if there was a loose wheel bearing that seemed fine. The only way I can make the car make the noise when not moving is put the car in drive have someone push down the brake pedal (doesn't do it with parking brake or in reverse) and push the car up and down, it will not make any noise if it is not in gear. It seems to need pressure on the drivetrain/suspension. I'm thinking possible tie rod end? I used a hose as a stethoscope the best I could, got under there, not much room especilly when bouncing, I seem to pick up the noise around the knuckle area. One other thing, tire is worn out on the inside, this problem may be a major contributor? Tomorrow I will throw on an old tie rod end I have laying around just to see if it makes a difference..... Thank u in advance for any ideas or thoughts.
First two things that come to mind are the CV joint and the wheel bearing. If no play on the wheel, then take a really close look at the CV joint on the drivers side.
CactusCat, u may be on to something? I swapped out the tie rod end, because I had an old one laying around and car still made noise. So I pulled out the drive shaft, after I used a hose as a stethoscope. I was able to make the drive shaft make the noise as I started to remove it, it need pressure and an up and down motion, then I could get it to make the noise, by just turning the wheel wasn't enough to get it to make the noise. Luckily there is a corvette salvage yard 20 minutes from my work. If it isn't the axle, it will only cost me $65 to find out. Thanks, will keep u posted.

Reason: Sorry, I meant axle not drive shaft.

U were right on, replaced axle today, noise is gone and it only cost me $60!. Thanks! I will give them a cheap shameless plug here, Contemporary Corvette in Bristol PA, they haven't let me down yet and there prices are great!
Excellent! Glad to help. Sounds like you know your stuff as well.
BTW I made a great investment yesterday for $3.99 at harbor freight, I bought a mechanics stethoscope, if by chance u don't have one, I high recommend one for anyone, who is a backyard mechanic. Now hopefully I can find these damn creaks, squeaks, pops, clicks and so on in the future, when they decide to show up. Lol.. Also as far as knowing my stuff as well, I am always willing to listen and learn and ask questions, I can't afford to pay someone to work on this car. Lol...... I wish I had more to offer on this forum, but I'm learning as I go with this particular vehicle. Thanks again!
