Service Steering Column warning after working on car
Hi guys,
I have a C5 Z06 and with 60k miles on it and it has has the Steering Column recall done about 2 yrs ago. When I bought the car, the torque tube bearings were on the way out. I drove the car for about 3 months with no issues and in Sept, took the car apart to fix the TT bearing. Between fixing my race car and life, I only got around to re-assembling the Vette in October. When I went to start it, the battery was a bit weaker from sitting for a month.
I started the car and the Service Column Lock warning message appeared. The car starts and runs with no issues, and I'm able to drive it around perfectly fine. Nevertheless the message is still on. I put the battery on a tender and still the warning message still shows up.
I'm at a bit of a loss as from what I read, if this message shows up, I should have a locked wheel and/or not be able to get passed 2mph...
Do you guys think a new battery would solve the issue?
The LMC5 is $40 plus shipping. I might be wrong but I would NOT expect shipping to be $20. You DO NOT need the unlocker since your column is never locked with NO KEY in the ignition..............
Yep, happened to me a few times. Just do the LMC5 and never look back. Also the gentleman from Compliance Parts is worth you purchasing directly from them. First rate customer service and very knowledgeable. It takes about 15 minutes to install. As mentioned, do the brown wire mod.

Mine locked with no key in the ignition. Still did not need the unlocker.
I called Compliance parts. He said to turn the ignition on, remove a fuse ( not sure what number now), then turn the ignition off. The car will not lock.
Then you go do the LMC5 mod ( including the brown wire mod) , then re-insert the fuse, reconnect the battery, and life is good!!

On my Z06 i could turn the wheel side to side, but got the Column Lock message,so got the LMC5 without the unlocker.Installed it without the Brown wire mod, started it up.Bingo,no message.Went to back up and turn the wheel. It was locked.Called Compliance and the guy was super helpful.Said on a handful of cars he has heard of this.Since i did not have the unlocker ,he explained how to go back to the BCM ,undo a certain colored wire and apply a 12 v power source to it.Heard the whirling sound and it unlocked. He said after doing this it will never lock again.Drove a few times then got the Pull Key message, went back and did the Brown Wire mod and has been perfect since.Guess what im saying is super customer support from Compliance and do the Brown wire mod when you are first in there.
