Default Question on the environmental controls

I have a 98 vette that the controls are stuck with blowing air directly at me. The know has come off and I have tired to move the directional air control but it is stuck. So my question is 2 fold:
1) is there an easy way to get the air to flow to my feet and windshield w/o having to pull the unit
2)How is this thing controlled? Is it cables and they are bound up or is it something else? How hard will it be to replace the unit?

Thanks

From what you are describing, there is a problem with the vacuum to the HVAC diverters.
Also which HVAC controller is in your car, the manual single zone or the dual zone with a temp display in the center of it? This does make a bit of difference in how to go about troubleshooting.

If you have the dual zone and it is not the vacuum line. Pull your codes and see what comes up

The **** that changes which vent is active most likely has a leak in it. This can be easily replaced.
If it is not this **** then the vacuum line from the back of the intake manifold to the vacuum canister in the passenger fender may be bad. Possibly the one way valve at the bottom of the canister.

With the dual zone the vacuum line is the most likely culprit.
