Default C5 parking brake show thickness

I'm busy replacing the discs & pads on my 02 6 speed coupe. While doing the rears I thought it'd be a good time to improve the performance of the parking break. On inspection the shoes are around 3mm thick, I'm wondering is this ok or should I replace them as I can't find any spec for new shoes re the thickness. Anyone got new ones ready to go on and could measure for me?

I don't know what the spec is however I think you'll be fine just adjusting them. They only hold the car in position so wear is very minimal. I adjusted mine about 100,000 miles ago and they still hold fine. I had about 3mm at the time.

I have no idea what they look like now though. I am about due for regular pads now and will inspect when I do the work.

How do the drums look? One of mine was obviously in a drag contact, with a clearly defined wear path, the other had a stuck adjuster screw and had never touched the drum. Ever.
Both were on the order of 1/8" thick (just not feeling metric this evening...) and I did not replace them.

Well got the brakes stripped down and noticed variance in shoe wear for some reason. I'm guessing the shoes and adjusters have never been apart before and it looks as though there's been some slight binding causing more wear on one of the shoes especially. Anyway got some nice new ones from RockAuto and fitted these after giving the adjusters a good clean and greasing. The new Powerstop rotors look impressive but more winter jobs to do before I'm able to see how everything performs.

Stupid question from a newbie... Did early C5s still have drum brakes on the rear?

The rears have disc brakes with a small drum emergency brake system, really quite unique!

"really quite unique" -- and a pain in the butt. One piece shoe that acts as its own retraction spring. No external access to the adjuster screw. And reinstalling the shoe retention spring has multiple threads on various methodologies.

It's actually not that unique, as my '15 Jeep Grand Cherokee uses a similar system.

The springs are a bit tricky, at first I couldn't figure out how they sat but eventually got them in the right place. Not sure exactly what purpose they serve but came with the new shoes so installed them. Looking forward to finding out if my work has been a success but for now the car is still off the road for more winter jobs.

My 2006 Dodge Ram Megacab has the same system as well.
