I bought my '03 Z06 about 4 months ago and I'm loving every minute of it! The car came with many nice upgrades and the PO was an "open checkbook" type of owner. I have receipts for things like Mobile 1 oil changes after 1,000 miles since the last Mobile 1 oil change!
I would expect that the column lock issue was handled, but I'd like to confirm it. Is there a module I can look for somewhere or some wires that may be reconfigured?
1) If you can turn the wheel freely with the car off and key out of the ignition that tells you the GM recall to install the smaller lock plate was performed. There will be no chance (in theory) that your column will now lock itself.
2) If the above is true and a recall was performed, then you will likely have the 2 MPH safety shut-off implemented. This is designed to come on if a column lock issue occurs to "protect" you. The only ways around it is A) for a tuner to set the speed ridiculously high [like to 250 MPH] or B) the most common resolution which is installing a column lock bypass that will also eliminate most of the cluster messages that may appear. You can check for presence of a CLB in two places. The "Corvettes of Houston" CLB - the classic one - is installed under the kick panel below the steering column. The more recent popular version the LMC5 is installed in the area on the passenger footwell panel (look in the passenger side and you will see the foot panel is secured with two latches).
The only true 100% fix is the lmc5 module. Look for pictures/videos online and check to see if it has been performed.
The gm recall does NOT fix the problem. A CLB will fix the problem, but it does have a moving part (relay) that can technically fail. The LMC5 has no moving parts and doesn't require removal of the dash or anything.
Thanks Guys! I have a few things to check and I'll report back. I watched the installation video for the LMC5 so I'll know right away whether it's there or not. It will be nice to know what I have and make sure the issue is addressed!
If the recall was done by GM, there should be a sticker in the engine compartment. The sticker is approximately 1"x1", is green and white (at least on mine), and is on the left or right wheel well (can't remember). It is a good idea to install an aftermarket fix if not done already.
I installed the LMC5 module in the car and it was a really easy project. It was actually fun. The instructions were very detailed and watching the Youtube video was useful too. It's one of those things where you spend more time thinking about it than it actually takes to do the work! Thanks to those that helped me choose this solution and provided input so I can be proactive and enjoy my Z!
