Default ***IMPORTANT*** GM 4L60E (Auto. Tranny) Maintenance Tip

The pressure regulator boost valve & it's sleeve should be replaced every 40,000 miles to avoid major damage that occurs when accumulated wear in the boost sleeve causes insufficient pressure to be made available in reverse. GM dealers are seeing numerous major repairs of the 4L60E at around 50,000 plus miles being traced to this boost valve & sleeve. The valve & sleeve can be replaced easily during a routine service of the tranny at an additional cost of about $50.00. This should be considered a must do maintenance procedure on the 4L60E.

Just curious if this is unique to the Vette. The 4L60E in my Roadmaster has 163,000 miles with no problems. (knock on wood!) :)

JCR,
Sorry, i don't have any pic's of the valve & sleeve. but i'm sure there is a diagram in the shop manuals for c5...or any GM car w/ the 460LE Tranny.

Robbie,
This problem is NOT unique to the vette. A lot of guys who have Impala SS & Caprice ('92-'96) have this problem...and yes, that would include your Roadmaster. May be a good idea to replace the valve & sleeve...before you have to replace tranny

Any idea what symptoms you would see if this was a problem?

This mod is as easy as they come if you have the right tools, in this case it's a small snap-ring plier. I reccomend buying the aftermarket piece from SONNAX industries, I use it in all my customers transmissions regardless of stock and up to full race. While your in there you may also want to consider a new manifold pack, GM only, this pack sends a verification signal to the computer after it has commanded a shift, if it gets old lazy the computer will start playing with line pressures and even sometimes cause erronious downshifts.... :chevy
