Default Check Engine Light... Now What?

I was driving home from work today when my check engine light came on (solid, not flashing). I've got 28247 miles on my '98. At idle, I wrote down the system settings:

Oil Pressure: 28 PSI

Oil Temp: 210 F

Coolant Temp: 214 F

Battery: 13.5 Volts

I checked under the hood and did not see any noticeable problems, i.e. broken belts, leaks, etc.

Any ideas? Time to call the dealer?

Thanks!

Updated...

I've got the following codes:

10-PCM P1416 H C
A6-SCM B2605 H

HELP!!!

Check the computer for any codes, that may give you a clue. I had a P0300H mis fire code that caused the check engine light to come on, deleted it and the light went out.

Just the other day my '99 was doing the same thing. I had to wait until over the weekend in order for me to take it in to the dealer. But come monday my engine light went off, but just to be safe I still decided to take it to the dealer (to at least have them tell me what the code was). Come to find out it was my new breathless cold air intake which I had installed about a month earlier(never had any probs until last week). Apparently my plug had come loose that lead into my MAF sensor and I was getting two codes: P0172 & P0175 (these are saying my air/fuel ratio is too high). The dealer gave me a new plug and only charged me for the labor (better safe than sorry).

On another note, I was told that GM had sent out a bulletin about false codes occuring. The P0172, I was told, has been known to come on for no real reason. The dealer wanted to reprogram my ECU (for $150), but I decided not to have it done.

Also, look in your manual. It will tell you (very, very briefly) about the difference between a solid and flashing check engine light and what possibly may cause these to occur.

Good luck! :chevy

Why isn't this a free fix?

Hold down options button and press fuel 4 times!

The computer will scroll through all fields.

Well, the check engine light came on again on the way to work this morning. The "A6-SCM" code went away, but now I've got a new one in addition to the "10-PCM" code...

10-PCM P1416 H C
28-TCS C1255 H C

Can someone give me an idea of specifically what to check for these things. The code descriptions don't help all that much.

Thanks!
