I have not tried to find the cause why the mirror does not darken the bright headlights of vehicles behind me.
That feature has never worked since I have owned the car,
Everything else on the mirror works, except the darkening feature, to soften bright lights behind me.
Also, are the side view mirrors supposed to do the same thing?
My window sticker for my 2003 shows an 1SB package which includes Electrochromic mirrors: Inside rearview & left outside rearview. I assume that means auto-dimming.
The driver's side mirror will dim if the system is turned on. The rear view mirror is the controller and therefore if that doesn't work the outside mirror won't either.
There is an on/off button located on the rear view mirror. It has to be held for a few seconds to turn it on or off. I cannot remember if there is an indicator light. If that doesn't work, check fuse 21 in the passenger side footwell fuse box. Also verify the plug is inserted firmly in the mirror.

funny you mention this i didnt think mine was working since i never saw it work, and the little green light was on.....then i noticed this.
I backed out of the dark garage into bright sun light using the only the inside real view mirror and all of a sudden the objects in the mirror grew darker......the mirror was dimming due to the bright light. I never knew it actually worked.

If the map lights work, the problem is not likely a fuse, since the auto dim function, map light, and glove compartment light are on the same circuit and are protected by #21 & #2 fuses in the footwell fuse box. If you’ve tried to turn the auto dim on (holding the button 3 seconds or so) and it doesn’t work, you may have a problem with the on/off button itself. There is a green indicator light that illuminates when the auto dim is powered.

Everything works correctly on the mirror, except the dimming feature.
The green indicator light lights when the system is activated, and goes out when I press the button to shut the feature off, but still no dimming.

Bob.
Dumb question...now that you know the green light is activated, how are you testing the feature? Are you expecting it to dim because you turned the feature on or are you in actual conditions where it should work? The system works by measuring the light differential between the front and rear. IIRC the front is detected by the sensor on the dash in the defrost grill (little bubble). The rearward sensor is in the mirror. If you want to test during the day, you can try covering the bubble sensor and see if the mirror dims. Hope this helps.

that was my point about it working when I backed it out of the garage, it was the only time I ever independently observed it working.

The only place I have tested it is at night, when a vehicle is behind me.
I press on the switch for three or four seconds to activate the system, the green indicator light comes on, but the mirror doesn't dim.
