Sprayed mine with throttle body cleaner only (no WD40) about 7 years ago. Not been a problem since. Used about 2/3rds of the can at the time (Not all at once). Beats taking the intake off to get it working again if you can do that.
I did the spray clean method a couple of times, over the years, but as mentioned, you'll eventually need to replace the valves. I replaced mine a couple of years ago.

...did mine 2 years ago and so far so good...bought 2 new check valves incase...
Glad to hear others have had long term success. Some do, some don't. I did the spray and within a few months the codes came back. Last summer I changed both valves and *knock on wood*, no issues since.
Had the code, tried the spray cleaner MANY times to no avail. Replaced both valves.... drivers side, easy. The passenger side, I moved from the back of the head to the passenger side, near the plugs. All well now.
