Looking @ a 1998 Corvette to purchase but has check engine light on for a/c and dealer/mechanic said either ECM or a/c switch were bad.So with that being said I do not know what to do,,,,,,pass it up or buy for less and have repaired....any knowledge about this problem will be greatly appreciated.
If the car is at a dealership, you may have to ask if you can pull the codes yourself. Make a note of how to do that using the DIC, write down all the codes that are displayed and post them here.
A/C codes are few but they do show up under "99-HVAC". It might be a good idea to negotiate the purchase so that they fix the A/C as a condition of the sale. If there are other codes, get them to either fix them or reduce the selling price.
I think you are going to find that the dealer won't lower the sale price a lot and probably not fix much of anything. There a lot of really nice Corvettes out there at reasonable prices. Might want to pass on this one and keep looking.
AC issues do NOT set the check engine light. Some emissions related issue is what set the CEL. Could be as minor as replacing the gas cap or could be pretty complex ($$$$$) to correct.
As mentioned above there will be Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) set if there is an AC issue. There will also be one or more DTC's set for the cause of the CEL.
You either need the owner/dealer to correct the issues or let you pull the DTC's so someone here can help determine what the car needs to correct the problems.
If owner/dealer will NOT repair or let you cannot pull the codes then pass on it. Plenty of very nice C5's out there that do not have issues.......
You are the best . Your info is always right on . Thanks for the help you give and to me especially
