Default Whining noise

so in the last few times I’ve driven the car has developed a whining noise.

It only seens to be audible at 50mph+ and only happens when I’m on the gas. If I let go of the pedal the noise stops immediately.

I have ave tried different gears and that doesn’t seem to matter. And it gets louder the faster I go. At 80 it’s pretty damn loud and annoying.

Any ideas what would cause this?

I get a severe whine from the passenger seat area whenever I go over 100.

In order to hopefully get more serious responses, moving this over to the C5 Tech section.

So assuming you’re home alone and the wife isn’t around, and your ears have stopped ringing from all of the screaming.

And you still hear the sound

I just opened up the hood and listened a bit and there is a whining noise from the front of the engine but can’t pinpoint the exact spot. Belts alternator? I’m pretty stumped on this

Check your pulleys. They might be dry and need to be replaced.

That would make sense since it’s after the car sat for most of the winter.

Can you just spray a little bit of white lithium onto them?

No. If they have been running without grease for awhile they are worn out and need to be replaced.

Is there any specific pulley I should start with to figure this out? Some pullys are obviously much easier to switch out than others

Try the tensioner pulley first. Take a 15mm socket, take tension off belt and slip it off pulley. Spin pulley and see if it's dry. If it is that one causing the problem, it is best to replace the tensioner with the pulley. It's probably worn out too. Easy job. If the belt is original, it should probably be replaced too.

Just tested that. And it spins fine but there is a little bit of bearing noise. So I’ll replace that since that’s really quick and easy. And see if it changes anything

It should not spin freely. There should be some drag caused by grease.

Well I can spin the things and it just goes and goes for awhile. So I guess it needs to be changed. Lol

Yes, it must be dry as a bone. You will see the difference on the new one. A few years ago I changed the pulley without changing the tensioner. Turns out the tensioner was worn out and it wore the pulley out in a year. Best to change entire tensioner with pulley to be safe.

there is a main drive, ac, accessory pulley/tensionwe. Which is that top one on the passenger side that I’m replacing.

You can get aftermarket brands cheaper. Good time to put a new belt on, if it's never been replaced.

I might be a little late on this one BUT, if you have not ordered yet, also take a look at RockAuto.
